The man died from flesh-eating bacteria after eating oysters

Florida health officials revealed that flesh-eating bacteria in raw oysters killed a 71-year-old man

A 71-year-old man died on July 10 from a bacterial infection after eating a tainted oyster at a restaurant in Sarasota, Florida, according to the Florida Department of Health.

The Florida Department of Health has not released the man's identity or the restaurant where he ate, but CBS Miami reported the man died two days after eating the oysters, after contracting a Vibrio vulnificus infection.

Health officials tell ABC Action News that the 71-year-old man also had other medical ailments that contributed to his death. According to the department's website, there were no similar cases in 2017, while three cases were recorded back in 2016.

Vibrio vulnificus is a bacterium that lives in warm, brackish seawater, according to the department of health.

Vibrio illness symptoms may include diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, chills, fever, shock, skin lesions and breakdown and wound infections. You can get infected by eating raw shellfish, particularly oysters, or by exposing open wounds to seawater. "Most infections occur from May through October when water temperatures are warmer".

This is the first confirmed case and death from Vibrio vulnificus in Sarasota County this year.

The CDC says that Vibrio vulnificus causes 80,000 illnesses each year in the United States.

Through this oyster, he contracted a gastrointestinal illness related to a flesh-eating bacteria on the oyster.

Mic's Emily Singer Detects Alleged Russian Spy in Oval Office
The charge was brought by the US Attorney for the District of Columbia and do not appear to stem from Mr Mueller's investigation. An ally of Russian leader Putin, Torshin is now a senior official with Russia's central bank and a former top Russian lawmaker.

Though sometimes labeled a "flesh-eating" bacteria, Vibrio vulnificus can not attack healthy skin, the Sun-Sentinel reported. "That's usually not the case when someone consumes the bacteria", Drennon said.

Hurricane floodwaters after Harvey resulted in at least one fatality from flesh-eating bacteria and there were several Vibrio deaths after Katrina.

Suspected cases of Vibrio vulnificus need to be immediately treated with antibiotics to improve their survival.
