Trump Says European Union Is America’s Biggest ‘Foe’

Putin shakes hands with President Donald Trump during the their bilateral meeting at the G20 summit in Hamburg Germany

U.S. President Donald Trump has said that he may ask his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin during their upcoming meeting to extradite to the U.S. the 12 Russian intelligence officers accused of attempting to interfere with the 2016 presidential election.

When Trump meets Putin, he sits down with a disciplined, detail-oriented and experienced Russian leader who has played on the world stage for more than 18 years, in contrast to the USA president's 18 months in office.

But the Washington-Moscow rivalry has a long history and there are many points of friction that could yet spoil Trump's hoped-for attractive friendship.

"I'm not going with high expectations".

The brash billionaire property magnate has been president for 18 months, while the 65-year-old former KGB officer has run Russian Federation for the past 18 years.

The summit, which comes at one of the most crucial junctures for the West since the 1991 fall of the Soviet Union, has alarmed some North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies who fear Putin might seek a grand deal that undermines the US -led transatlantic alliance. "I respect the leaders of those countries", he said from his golf course in Scotland.

"I do believe in meetings", Trump insisted in an interview with CBS News that aired before he touched down in Helsinki. "So in this regard I think he definitely plays in a different league", said Gabuev.

Paul Manafort fails to win freedom while challenging jail order
The 69-year old is now under arrest for bank fraud and money laundering with his criminal trial set to commence later this month. Besides the charges of financial fraud in Virginia, he faces charges in Washington, including violating federal lobbying laws.

Others on the USA side sought to lower expectations, attempting to downgrade the summit to just a regular bilateral meeting, given that no major achievements are likely. "We have to start to set them right".

Trump left a trail of diplomatic wreckage across Europe in recent days after contentious meetings with or comments about some of America's closest allies, the backbone of the postwar institutions and alliances that Washington long has championed.

Many fear that Trump - in his eagerness to prove that he was right to seek the summit with Putin despite Russia's often hostile stance - may give up too much ground.

That divide between president and presidency is recognized in America as well, nowhere more obviously than on the issue of Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Mr Trump's meeting with the Russian President comes days after 12 Russian intelligence officers were indicted in the U.S. over alleged of Democrats ahead of the 2016 United States election. "Whoever says we are foes is spreading fake news", Tusk tweeted.

"Well, I might. I hadn't thought of that".

The idea that Russian Federation had worked to influence the vote that year was first posited by US intelligence agencies during the administration of Barack Obama, but confidence in that culpability only grew once Trump was inaugurated.

Senior diplomat and now chairman of the Council on Foreign Relations Richard Haass said that for centuries world order has depended on "non-interference in the internal affairs of others and respect for sovereignty". USA intelligence officials have warned that they expect the Kremlin to interfere in the November midterm elections and the 2020 presidential race. He suggested that the relationship with the United States would need to be "readjusted" and that Germany should align itself more closely with Europe.

Despite the doubts of his top national security advisers, Trump is keen to withdraw U.S. troops from eastern Syria, where they have been battling the Islamic State.

Iran has fought alongside Russian Federation on behalf of Syrian leader Bashar Assad, but the extent of Moscow's direct influence on Tehran is questionable.

"There's a menu of things to be concerned about: that he might withdraw American troops from Syria, that he might cancel military exercises with our regional allies, that he might recognize Russia's annexation of Crimea", Sen.

Trump certainly does not expect to win over the Washington media and foreign policy establishment.

He wrote: "America and the European Union are best friends".

"Helsinki may not be impressed either".
