Nirbhaya rape case: Amnesty says executions don't eradicate crime against women

India’s Supreme Court reaffirms death penalty for ‘diabolical’ assailants in 2012 fatal gang rape

On May 5 previous year, the top court had upheld the death penalty to the four convicts - Mukesh (29), Pawan (22), Vinay Sharma (23) and Akshay Kumar Singh (31), saying the "brutal, barbaric and diabolic nature" of the crime could create a "tsunami of shock" to destroy a civilised society.

The brutal crime had sparked widespread protests and drew global attention over violence against women in India.

Mukesh, Pawan Gupta and Vinay Sharma, who were sent to the gallows for the chilling crime that sparked a national outrage, had approached the apex court seeking mercy and with a request that their death sentence be reduced to life imprisonment.

The apex court during the hearing of the case on Monday said that the death row convicts failed to point out "error apparent on the face of record" in the judgement.

Trump set to announce highly anticipated US Supreme Court pick
If as expected Trump nominates someone firmly to the right, conservatives could dominate the court for years. The White House hopes Kyl's close ties to Senate Republicans will help smooth the path to confirmation.

India's Supreme Court on Monday rejected the pleas to review the capital sentences of three assailants in a notorious gang rape and murder of a young college student that shook India in 2012, bringing them one step closer to eventual execution.

The victim's mother, who was present in the court when the order was announced, said she hopes the convicts are hanged "as soon as possible".

It all started on the fateful day of December 16, 2012, when the four appellants along with the main accused late Ram Singh and the juvenile accused took out a bus for a "joyride" as was the routine on Sunday evenings. At the time, due to Indian laws that prohibit the naming of rape victims, sections of the media referred to Singh as "Nirbhaya", which means fearless, a nod to her determination to survive in the days after the incident.

The woman was gangraped on the intervening night of December 16-17, 2012 inside a running bus in South Delhi by six persons and severely assaulted before being thrown out on the road. "Yet we are confident that the judgement will be in our favour and we will get justice".

Previous Iran blames Washingtong for the spike in oil prices
President Donald Trump continued to push top OPEC producer Saudi Arabia to pump more and reduce petroleum prices for consumers. Inventories at Cushing, Oklahoma, the delivery point for USA crude futures, fell to their lowest level since December 2014.

The Supreme Court in its 2017 verdict had upheld the capital punishment awarded to them by the Delhi High Court and the trial court in the sensational case of gangrape and murder of a 23-year-old paramedic student on 16 December 2012.

Ms Singh was dumped on the streets 45 minutes later and died from her internal injuries 13 days after the attack in a Singapore hospital.

A juvenile accused was convicted by a juvenile justice board.

Of the six people arrested, one committed suicide in prison in 2013, while the juvenile was sentenced to three years in a reform facility and released in 2015.
