The agency says the fire called Klamathon started Thursday afternoon and has forced evacuations in the small town of Hornbrook, California.

Further up north and just south of the California-Oregon border, the 34-square-mile (88-square-kilometer) Klamathon Fire in rural Siskiyou County was just 5 percent contained. There have been no reported injuries.

"Most of our active fires are occurring right now in the Rocky Mountain area which includes Colorado as well as the Great Basin area which includes Utah, Nevada and Idaho", Jones said.

"We don't even have an address because of the devastation around the area", a Siskyou County sheriff's spokesman told the Chronicle. It is a high-priority fire because the Roaring Fork Valley is a heavily populated area.

So far, 72 structures have been destroyed and nine have been damaged. It's not clear how numerous damaged and destroyed buildings were homes and how many were garages, barns or other outbuildings in the rural area.

In addition to fueling wildfires, the heatwave left thousands without power in Los Angeles on Saturday due to high electricity demand.

Dozens of fires have broken out across the western United States, fanned by scorching heat, winds and low humidity.

In Goleta - near the city of Santa Barbara - the Times documented a family of eight who had still been unpacking boxes in their new house when the Holiday fire destroyed it. One firefighter was taken to a hospital with facial burns and was reported in good condition.
