Turks begin voting for president, parliament in crucial test for Erdogan

Erdogan expects Turkey’s development level to reach the levels of Russia, US

If both the presidential and the parliamentary elections go against Erdogan, Turkey's politics, and possibly the country, could undergo significant change.

Under constitutional amendments approved after a controversial 2017 referendum, Turkey is making a transition from a parliamentary system to a presidential one - giving the next president expanded powers, abolishing the prime minister's post, and eliminating numerous checks and balances created to help parliament protect against the misuse of presidential powers. The changes will take effect after the elections.

However, Erdogan's main rival, Muharrem Ince of the secularist Republican People's Party (CHP), promised to reverse Turkey's possible swing towards one-man rule under Erdogan. Many political experts believe Inje is capable of dragging the race into a run-off.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan runs for re-election as the candidate of the People's Alliance, formed by the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) and the opposition Nationalist Movement Party (MHP).

The results, expected later today, could - assuming he wins the presidential poll -dramatically strengthen Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's hold on power, giving him sweeping new executive powers approved in a referendum previous year.

Chinese media says US has 'delusions', urges focus on domestic development
US economists, meanwhile, agree that USA consumers and workers will be among the first to feel the impact of Trump's trade war.

Sunday's elections were originally scheduled for late 2019.

Erdogan, whose mastery of political rhetoric is acknowledged even by critics, has won a dozen elections but is now fighting against the backdrop of increasing economic woes.

Voting on Istanbul's Asian side, 59-year-old Sebnem Uzgit said: "Our hope is Muharrem Ince". If a candidate wins just over 50 percent of the vote, he will win the presidency, but if not, there will be a runoff on July 8.

While Erdogan's opponents accuse him of a risky economic policy that has weakened Turkey, his supporters insist Turkey's infrastructure has improved manyfold under Erdogan and the AKP.

But in a situation labelled as blatant unfairness by activists, the HDP's presidential candidate Selahattin Demirtas has campaigned from a prison cell after his November 2016 arrest on charges of links to outlawed Kurdish militants. If the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) wins seats by polling over the 10 percent minimum threshold, the AKP will struggle to keep its overall majority. "I hope that we will wake up to a more handsome day tomorrow".

While the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were present in the celebration, Prince William and Kate Middleton didn't attend the event. Her husband Nick Pettman, who works in the City, will also be at the christening, as will the spouses of all the godparents.

The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe is monitoring the elections with over 350 observers. Ballot papers that don't bear the official stamps will still be considered valid - a measure that led to allegations of fraud in last year's referendum.

More than 59 million Turkish voters have been voting since 6am this morning at over 180,000 polling stations that will close in about an hour's time.

The vote is taking place under a state of emergency declared after the failed coup attempt, which allows the government to curtail civil rights.
