A pair of carjackings and a chaotic hunt for a suspect ended with the shooting death of an armed man by a civilian in the parking lot of a Walmart superstore in Tumwater, according to police and witnesses.

Kyle Fievez, the son of the injured driver, a 48-year-old man, phoned The Olympian Monday morning and said his father had been shot twice, once in the shoulder near his neck and once in the side of his body, the newspaper reported.

The suspect then attempted to carjack another person in the parking lot when he was approached by two armed civilians.

The Walmart Supercenter is a little over a mile north of where the suspect crashed his vehicle. He shot the 48-year-old man in a failed attempt to carjack his vehicle, then moved on to a second auto.

According to FOX40 sister station KCPQ, Tumwater Police spokeswoman Laura Wohl said it all happened just after 5:30 p.m. when officers responded to an erratic driver.

Caitlyn Wallner of Tenino was standing in the self-checkout line.

"All of a sudden, you hear this pop or a crash sound.About 15 to 20 seconds maybe even later, another sound exactly the same", said John Gerasimczyk.

"We never want to see citizens put themselves in harm's way", she said of the citizen who shot the suspect, but, "in this case we don't know if he stopped the suspect from killing or hurting other people, and that can only be a good thing".

She didn't think it was real at first, but the gunshots kept happening, Wallner said.

Another woman who was shopping with her children told the network that they all fled the shop and hid behind a parked vehicle. "Shooter.' And I knew something was serious", she woman said.

Kailani Bailey, 19, of Lacey also was inside the Walmart grocery shopping when a tall man in a gray T-shirt and jeans sprinted into the building, shoving people out of the way and shouting "Move, move!"

"Then somebody yelled, 'Run, run!' and everyone took off".

"When we got about to the door, I heard someone say, 'gun". When she got outside, she said she heard more shots.

When she was able to move her vehicle, she came upon a woman who had run out of the store but couldn't find her auto.

Her stolen vehicle was discovered in a parking lot near the store, according to police. She was hiding on the ground crying. "This (suspect) could have taken out more people, wounded or killed", said witness Brian Adams.
