House won't take on immigration without Trump's support, after Trump expresses doubts

House Speaker Paul D. Ryan takes questions from reporters Wednesday following a closed-door GOP meeting on immigration

"The message is that no one is exempt from immigration law".

"We are unable to keep families in a detention setting together for an extended period", the DHS official said, noting that nowhere else in the United States are law enforcement agencies expected to detain children with their parents. When White House Chief Of Staff John Kelly quieted down on addressing family separation, the Department of Homeland Security began testing the approach last summer in certain areas in Texas. The administration is looking for ways to unwind DACA while navigating lower-court rulings that keep it in place mainly to increase pressure on Democrats to take that deal, but until then, Trump sees a tough stand on the issue as a net victor for himself. It's is unlikely to be approved in the Senate.

Rep. Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., the GOP's No. 2 vote counter, told reporters that leaders were seeking "clarity" from the White House after Trump made his comments on Fox.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions had earlier cited the Bible in his defence of the border policy that has resulted in hundreds of children being separated from their parents.

Australian actress Rebel Wilson has Bauer Media libel payout cut
The Victorian Court of Appeal agreed, setting aside the decision to award her just over Aus$3.9 million for economic losses. The Bridesmaids actor took to Twitter and wrote, "I'm away on location in Europe filming right now".

The latest draft measure also says that children apprehended at the US border must not be separated from their parents while in the custody of the Department of Homeland Security, responding to reports of migrant children being torn from their parents at crossings. It's the fallout from the Trump administration's "zero-tolerance policy" that calls for children to be taken away from parents who take them across the border.

These are just some of the stories of families who have been separated, a number of them as a result of Attorney General Jeff Sessions' May announcement that the Trump administration was enforcing a "zero tolerance" policy toward people entering the US without authorization.

Both bills, which are still undergoing changes, contain provisions aimed at helping young immigrants brought to the USA illegally as children, often called Dreamers.

Conservatives are leery of legislation protecting from deportation immigrants who arrived illegally, calling it amnesty.

Trump heaps praise on 'tough guy' Kim Jong Un
Regarding the alliance, we are dealing with all the issues under the premise that we maintain the ironclad joint defense posture. In comments reported by Reuters , he said there was still "a great deal of work to do. a long way to go with North Korea".

Republicans were reluctant to tackle the "Dreamer" issue this year.

The Trump administration is preparing for a legal stalemate that could allow it to circumvent several federal judges who have temporarily halted its plan to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

Less than 24 hours before Trump shivved the compromise bill, his press secretary gave no indication the president supported one of the bills over the other. Eventually, they could apply for citizenship. It prioritizes education, English language proficiency, military service and continued employment.

The compromise bill would end the practice of separating families at the border and provide legal protections to so-called Dreamers, immigrants brought to the USA illegally as children, including a pathway to citizenship for at least some of them. It authorizes National Guard troops at the U.S. -Mexico border. A summary of the GOP bill released to reporters claims it addresses family separation, which some reporters repeated credulously. Or, as former White House chief economic adviser Gary Cohn put it more succinctly on Thursday at the Washington Post when discussing the ever-turbulent West Wing, where policy stances can quickly shift: "Tomorrow's a different day".
