U.S. officially repeals net neutrality rules

Net Neutrality Ends Tomorrow, FCC On Track To Remove Rules As Scheduled

Advocates of net neutrality fear without the rules in place, internet providers will have too much control over web content.

The repeal of "net neutrality" took effect six months after the Federal Communications Commission voted to undo the rules, which had barred broadband and cellphone companies from favoring their own services and discriminating against rivals such as Netflix.

But Gigi Sohn, former counselor for former FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler, said in a statement Monday that consumers will have little recourse against ISPs if they have a complaint about internet providers' behavior: "For the first time since the creation of broadband, the (FCC) will not take responsibility for protecting consumers or competition".

"Now, on June 11, these unnecessary and harmful internet regulations will be repealed and the bipartisan, light-touch approach that served the online world well for almost 20 years will be restored", Pai said in a statement last month. Most major internet providers have publicly pledged not to cherry-pick consumer content, though activists say without enforcement those are largely empty promises.

No Throttling: broadband providers may not impair or degrade lawful Internet traffic on the basis of content, applications, services, or non-harmful devices.

Will I have to pay more to reach certain sites or services?

.

More than 20 states sued the government to stop the repeal, as did the public-interest group Free Press and the think tank Open Technology Institute and Firefox browser maker Mozilla. In other words, no speeding up, slowing down or blocking specific websites or online services. The new approach effective Monday hands much of the responsibility for enforcing violations to the Federal Trade Commission, a sister agency. He says small business owners like Black, who sells 99% of his product online, could end up losing customers to these large corporations if they pay for a faster website.

Some states are trying to ensure that net neutrality is in effect, these states include Washington, Montana, and NY; other states have legislation pending. The rules also restricted ISPs from charging extra for certain traffic, creating so-called fast lanes for companies and consumers. Legislation in other states, like California and NY, is still proceeding and likely to be as strict as Washington's.

Macron: G7 leaders must be civil as they pressure Trump
From L-R, European Council President Donald Tusk, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau , German Chancellor Angela Merkel, U.S. Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs Chrystia Freeland questioned the Trump administration's move on CNN .

For instance, both the ISPs and the FCC have claimed that net neutrality has hurt investment.

Some Congressional Democrats are seeking a repeal of their own, the overturning of the 2017 order that ends the 2015 rules. It may sound like a miracle, but it's actually just HB 2282, a bill that passed in March that protects net neutrality and a free and open internet.

Some lawmakers, states and tech companies are still fighting to save the rule.

Also, the Senate voted to save net neutrality, though that effort isn't likely to become law.
