Al Shabaab has claimed responsibility for an attack in which a USA commando was killed and four others were wounded when they came under fire in the country.

It was the first public announcement of a us military combat death on the African continent since four USA service members were killed in a militant ambush in Niger in October.

"The US provided advice, assistance and aerial surveillance during the mission".

The three wounded U.S. service members and the Kenyan soldier were evacuated by military aircraft and the USA troops are in "stable condition", receiving medical care outside of Somalia, according to one United States military official familiar with the operation. Three of the wounded US service members and the one local fighter who was wounded in the attack were medically evacuated, the Pentagon said.

The US military says its forces operate on an "advise and assist" mission with the Somali National Army.

For several years, US special operations troops have been on the front lines in Somalia, advising local troops in a long running campaign against the al-Qaida aligned al-Shabab group. The US said no civilians were killed during the strikes.

The name of the fallen service member is being withheld pending next of kin notification, according to AFRICOM.

The Portuguese has become one of the biggest stars in world football since moving to Real from Manchester United in 2009. Meanwhile, the forward will miss Portugal's warm-up game against Belgium, as they prepare for the upcoming tournament.

President Donald Trump called the soldiers heroes Friday night. The group was blamed for the truck bombing in Mogadishu in October that killed more than 500 people and raised concerns about al-Shabaab's ability to build ever-larger explosives.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the families of our serviceman who was killed and his fellow servicemen who were wounded in Somalia", Trump tweeted. Its fighters continue to attack the bases of a multinational African Union force that remains largely responsible for security as Somalia's fragile central government tries to recover from decades of chaos.

Al-Shabab, which is fighting to impose Shariah law across Somalia, was pushed out of the capital, Mogadishu, and other major urban cities more than two years ago. A year ago there was also an incident in Mali in which two SEAL Team Six operators allegedly murdered a Green Beret on an embassy compound, reportedly over fears that he would expose a money laundering scheme that the SEALs were running. A Pentagon investigation of the incident produced a highly critical report.
