Tariffs row with Canada 'family quarrel'

Donald Trump hints at new deal

The full interview with Trudeau will air Sunday on "Meet the Press with Chuck Todd". He has frequently threatened to withdraw the United States from the deal, but thus far he has opted to stay in while attempting to negotiate a new deal between the member countries.

Canada's tariffs on imported USA goods - everything from strawberry jam to sleeping bags - could steer consumers to seek out cheaper, made-in-Canada alternatives, but domestic industry players are fearful that input costs will rise and American politicians could retaliate in kind.

President Donald Trump, center, accompanied by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, left, speaks to members of the media on the South Lawn outside the Oval Office in Washington, Friday, June 1, 2018, after meeting with former North Korean military intelligence chief Kim Yong Chol. "We're also putting a number of tariffs on consumer goods, finished products for which Canadians have easy alternatives".

Canada responded by imposing $16 billion worth of tariffs on the U.S. "And on top of that, these tariffs are going to be hurting American workers and Canadian workers", Trudeau said.

Other allies have denounced the tariffs in similarly harsh terms.

Allies including Canada and the European Union are threatening retaliatory tariffs.

Memorial Tournament -- Tiger Woods cards 4-under 68 in third round
That left DeChambeau with an eight-foot putt for par and the title but it drifted left and he signed for a one-under 71. Cantlay made two eagles, including a hole-in-one on the par-3 eighth.

"Economic nationalism leads to war", he warned. Canada, China and the European Union also announced they will address these actions at the World Trade Organization.

Japanese Finance Minister Taro Aso, whose country's steel and aluminum producers have been paying the U.S. metals tariffs since March 23, called the United States action "deeply deplorable". The tariffs are unusual because they target some of America's closest allies.

But the Trump administration sought to downplay Trudeau's comments on Sunday.

He said Canadians are insulted to be deemed a security threat when "our solders ... fought and died together on the beaches of World War II and the mountains of Afghanistan and have stood shoulder to shoulder in some of the most hard places".

That summit, which will be hosted by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, will also mark Trump's first visit to Canada as president.

"There were several issues discussed at the G7 over which there was no agreement", Scholz told reporters.

White House economic advisor Larry Kudlow said the tariffs on steel and aluminum "may go on for a while", or not.

Morneau has said Ottawa is buying the project from Kinder Morgan Canada in order to help the expansion overcome political risks.

Kudlow added, "To say that it is an attack on Canada is not right".

"I think our approach has been consistent all the way through".

The 10 per cent tariffs or similar measures on selected USA imports are set to take effect July 1 after an industry consultation period. If not, an all-out trade war may become unavoidable.

French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said the United States has only a few days to avoid sparking a trade war with its allies and it was up to Washington to make a move to de-escalate the tensions.

Liberman en route to Moscow in bid against Iranian entrenchment in Syria
He said that Syria's air defenses were now much stronger than before thanks to Russian Federation . But tracts remain outside his control at the borders with Iraq, Jordan and Turkey.

Trump also said in a separate tweet that "The United States must, at long last, be treated fairly on Trade".
