Taliban, Afghan officials in ceasefire talks: US general

Seven attackers killed as Afghan forces stave off major terror bid

Gunmen armed with assault rifles and grenade launchers stormed the heavily fortified headquarters of the Afghan interior ministry on Wednesday, battling security forces for more than two hours in the latest attack on the capital Kabul.

In Logar Province, just to the south of Kabul, insurgents mounted an early morning attack on Wednesday against the First District Police Headquarters in the provincial seat of Pul-i-Alam, using a suicide auto bomb followed by three gunmen, according to Afghan police officials.

A local affiliate of the Islamic State (IS) extremist group has also launched a number of deadly attacks in recent months, including in Kabul.

In a statement Wednesday, the United States command in Afghanistan said the strikes against those behind a recent attack in the Helmand provincial capital of Farah resulted in "more than 50 casualties".

The U.S. military said the May 24 meeting involved commanders from different Afghan provinces, including neighboring Farah, where Taliban fighters briefly threatened to overrun the provincial capital this month.

The Taliban claimed the attacks in both provinces. The group views the Afghan government as weak, divided and unable to make decisions on big issues, including the full withdrawal of US/Nato forces, releasing their prisoners and the removal of Taliban officials' names from sanctions lists.

Afghanistan was hit by multiple militant attacks across the country Wednesday, as the US military announced it carried out a successful airstrike targeting top Taliban leaders.

Scores of Afghan militants have been killed in an artillery rocket strike in the country's south, the US has claimed, with the Taliban launching their own attack on government forces on Wednesday.

Khalid Safi, a spokesman for the provincial governor, says those killed were the commander of the police station and the deputy director of traffic police for Logar's capital city, Puli Alim.

"The fighting is over, seven have all been killed by security forces between the first and second security perimeter", Kabul police chief Daud Amin said.

Daesh said it was behind the attack, but provided no immediate evidence for its claim. The Taliban have threatened to attack voter registration centres.

Meanwhile, in the southern city of Kandahar, three civilians were killed and at least 10 others wounded by a May 30 explosion that appeared to have targeted a mechanic's workshop repairing Afghan National Army vehicles, a spokesman for the provincial governor said.
