Facebook killing controversial ‘Trending’ feature, breaking news alerts and more coming
In 2016, Gizmodo reported that Facebook's contract workers often chose not to link to news with a conservative slant. The contractor claimed Facebook downplayed conservative issues and promoted liberal causes.

Karthik spelled the word "koinonia" correctly to become the champion late Thursday.

He showed his aptitude for spelling early, arranging block letters to form the word "horse" at age three, said his father, Krishna Nemmani.

Nemmani will take home a trophy and $40,000 in prizes, a $25,000 cash prize, a reference library from Merriam-Webster, and trips to NY and Hollywood.

The cash prize for second place is $30,000.

Karthik also used study materials compiled by two well-regarded former Scripps spellers and fellow Texans, Shobha Dasari and her younger brother, Shourav, who finished fourth past year and won almost every other bee he competed in. Blackburn has been trying to jump from the House to the Senate, where she hopes to occupy Senator Bob Corker's empty seat. Have you seen what they're doing to us? Not now, not ever. "We have been very pleased with the response to that".

The bee started with 512 spellers, who took a written exam and spelled a word on stage Tuesday, May 29.

After her defeat, she was swarmed by dozens of current and former spellers who wished her well, smiling throughout.

Nemmani out-spelled a record 515 contestants on his way to the Scripps Bee trophy. In the competition's seventh round, she slipped up on the word mydriasis, which is an excessive or prolonged dilatation of the pupil of the eye.

"She was just as graceful as she could be", bee program manager Corrie Loeffler said.

On Wednesday night, bee officials used test scores to determine that 41 spellers would move on to the finals, to compete under the glaring lights of prime-time television.
