Manchester United meet release clause of Porto defender Diogo Dalot

Man Utd transfer news Diogo Dalot

United have resolved to meet Dalot's buyout clause of €20 million (£17.5m/$23m), and a source close to the operation says the Red Devils are hoping to have the deal done before the week is out.

Full name "Jose Diogo Dalot Teixeira", he joined the Porto academy as a nine-year-old in 2008 and broke into the first team during the 2017-18 season under manager Sergio Conceicao. Porto are understood to have turned down bids below Dalot's release clause past year.

Young and Valencia made 77 appearances between them last season but there are concerns about their workload as United prepare for another campaign in both the Premier League and Champions League.

Dalot has represented Portugal from under-15 to under-21 level and made his Porto debut in October.

According to Freelance writer Jan Hagen, Valencia had even activated the buyout clause, with Dalot himself rejecting the chance to move to Spain.

Strengthening his defence is a priority and a new right-back to act as a long-term replacement for Antonio Valencia is desperately needed as the Ecuadorian worldwide turns 33 in August.
