Trump U-turn re-opens possibility of 'NUCLEAR WAR' with North Korea

Park Strategies’ Sean King discusses Trump’s decision to cancel the June 12 summit with North Korea’s Kim Jong-un

President Donald Trump's last-minute move to pull out of a highly anticipated summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un further clouded the murky prospects of the global diplomatic push to resolve the nuclear standoff with Pyongyang.

In a personal letter to Kim, Trump announced Thursday he would not go ahead with the June 12 summit in Singapore, following what the White House called a "trail of broken promises" by the North.

Donald Trump has said the June talks with North Korea could be back on.

"The recent easing situation on the peninsula is hard won, the political settlement process is faced with a rare historic opportunity", Lu Kang, ministry of foreign affairs (MFA) spokesperson said at the regular ministry briefing on Friday.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, USA president Donald Trump.

Using one of his favorite phrases, Trump told reporters, "We'll see what happens", adding, "it could even be the 12th" - the original summit date.

"Under the current circumstances we hope both the DPRK and the USA can cherish the recent positive progress, stay patient, show goodwill, move in the same direction and continue to stay committed to promoting the denuclearisation of the peninsula", he added. North Korea sends hundreds of people to the games in February, including Kim's sister, who conveys her brother's desire for a summit with Moon.

Iran nuclear deal: Khamenei lists demands for European powers
Iran is one of the world's largest oil producers, and the export of oil and gas is worth billions of dollars each year. He also warned that Iran would continue its enrichment of uranium if the terms are not met.

"You can not begin a negotiation with North Korea by advocating for the worst conclusion for its leader and expect that negotiation to succeed", said Bay State U.S. Sen. Drawn to big moments and bigger headlines, Trump viewed the North Korea summit as a legacy-maker, believing that the combustible combination of his bombast and charm could produce warmer relations between North and South.

At a late afternoon briefing Thursday, a senior administration official described the recent interactions between the USA and North Korea as "a trail of broken promises".

He said: "We're going to see what happens". Pompeo first travelled to North Korea in his capacity as the CIA Director last month and again this month as the Secretary of State.

North Korea later said it was willing to talk "at any time in any form".

"I was shocked by Trump's letter especially since it was published on the same day as the dismantlement of the Punggye-ri nuclear test site and just two days after his summit with President Moon Jae-in", Shawn Ho, an associate research fellow at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies in Singapore, told The Korea Herald.

"The cancellation of the summit raises China trade risk", said Ryan Hass, who directed China policy for the National Security Council's China during Obama administration and is now a Brookings Institution foreign policy fellow. Although he attributed his decision to the "tremendous anger and open hostility" in North Korean official statements, the more likely explanation for the about-face was that it had become increasingly apparent that the summit would fail, given that North Korea would not agree to completely dismantle its nuclear arsenal and capabilities.

Trump withdrew from the summit Thursday, but has left open the possibility that the two leaders could still meet.

The State Department urged citizens to seek medical counsel if they experience similar symptoms. The spokeswoman added that the Chinese government is also investigating the matter.

Gen. Vincent Brooks, the top US commander in South Korea, also offered reassurances Friday that the summit cancellation didn't mean the end of diplomacy. Putin said of Trump's cancellation announcement, "In Russia we took this news with regret".

He said the North Koreans remain "unchanged in our goal" of peace and stability and were willing to "offer the US side time and opportunity".

The explosions, that were witnessed by invited worldwide media, were supposed to build confidence ahead of the planned meeting next month between Kim and President Donald Trump.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, testifying Thursday on Capitol Hill, said North Korea had not responded to repeated requests from US officials to discuss logistics for the summit.

Wrote Trump: "If you change your mind having to do with this most important summit, please do not hesitate to call me or write".

"We got a lot of dial tones, Senator", he told committee chairman Bob Corker. It often doesn't get mentioned but Donald Trump actually blames China for some of this impasse.
