Judge rules Mueller has authority to prosecute former Trump campaign chairman Manafort

Blow Paul Manafort was told his attempt to get the case in Washington D.C. dismissed had failed in a 37-page ruling

"Manafort complains that the appointment order 'purports to give the special counsel jurisdiction to investigate and prosecute anything else he might discover during the course of the original investigation", Jackson wrote, "but that is not what the order says".

The charges against him in the Washington case include conspiring to launder money, conspiring to defraud the United States and failing to register as a foreign agent.

The decision allows one of two criminal cases against Manafort to proceed.

A federal judge dealt president Donald Trump's former campaign manager Paul Manafort a major blow on Tuesday by refusing to dismiss criminal charges brought by special counsel Robert Mueller, after Mr Manafort claimed that the probe has run amok and should be reined in. "So even in the unlikely event that the Acting Attorney General and the Special Counsel never discussed what the investigation included at the time of the appointment, the singular event that defendant insists would be necessary to make his indictment valid - an explicit referral of the specific matter to the Special Counsel - has taken place". And regardless, she wrote, it was clear that Mueller had been specifically authorized to investigate not only Manafort's possible links to Russian Federation but also his Ukrainian business. "Thus, the indictment falls well within the authority granted to the special counsel to conduct the ongoing investigation".

"The Special Counsel would have been remiss to ignore such an obvious potential link between the Trump campaign and the Russian government", she wrote later in the opinion.

Carney Says Modest Rate Hikes Needed Even as Inflation Cools
Carney defended himself against that charge, arguing that when the situation changes, the bank's policy response has to change. The decisions are made after a vote by each committee member; in the event of a tie, the governor has the casting vote.

"The case did not arise in a vacuum, and the special counsel did not create his own job description", Jackson wrote on Tuesday in defense of Mueller. Additionally, Rosenstein "confirmed in writing that he assigned the Special Counsel the specific responsibility to investigate the very allegations that comprise the" challenged indictment.

U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson of the District of Columbia. The Virginia federal judge, TS Ellis, has not yet ruled on the question. And Donald Trump cited them in a speech to the National Rifle Association to claim that Mueller's indictment is a "phony Russian Federation witch hunt".

The ruling marks a setback for Mr Manafort, who last month was buoyed when the judge in the Alexandria case aggressively questioned prosecutors about whether their case was overly broad and mused that he believed they were using the charges to get him to turn over dirt on Mr Trump.

Juventus Wallop Milan To Lift Coppa Italia
After a goalless first half, Juve took the lead after 56 minutes when Medhi Benatia headed home a cross from Miralem Pjanic. Buffon made an early save off Patrick Cutrone minutes into the game with Costa and Paulo Dybala both testing Donnarumma.

Judge Jackson's opinion is a warning that Trump might want to stop counting his chickens.
