Melaye's Arrest Wasn't The Reason We summoned the IGP, Says Senate

Ibrahim Idris, the Inspector General of Police, says he owes the senate no apology after failing to honour their invitation for a third consecutive time.

"The Senate views this persistent refusal as a great danger to our democracy and hence the Senate resolved to declare IGP as an enemy of democracy and not fit to hold any public office within and outside Nigeria".

According to the police chief, he did not have to appear before the lawmakers, noting that a senior police officer of the rank of Deputy Inspector-General or an Assistant Inspector-General could act on his behalf in an official capacity at any function.

Clarifying that section which revealed limits of the senate in inviting individuals, Falana said that even President Muhammadu Buhari and governors can not be summoned by the senate.

The Police IG also ignored the Senate's second summon of Wednesday, May 3, when he instead visited Kaduna State after some bandits killed over 45 people in Birin Gwari community.

Both institutions seem to be looking up to the court to ascertain whether or not Idris should appear in person before the lawmakers, or he can delegate a subordinate to represent him.

But in a swift reaction, police Spokesperson, Moshood Jimoh, argued that the attack on his person by the senators was "deliberate blackmail, witch-hunting with mischievous motives to hand-twist" his boss.

"The Senate should take the next step within their legislative instrument and powers to restore the respect and dignity which the generality of Nigerians and the 1999 Constitution (as amended), bestowed on them", the statement said. The resolution of the Senate leading to his invitation is clear and we invite our people to check. The Inspector General of Police and the Nigeria Police Force will not be deterred by blackmail from any individual or group no matter how highly placed from the enforcement of Law and Order and ensuring that the Rule of Law prevails.

He said, "The Nigeria Police Force as a law-abiding organization will continue to hold the Senate in high esteem but wishes to impress on the Senate not to harbour criminal elements among its fold or condone criminality".
