In the early hours of Thursday morning, the IDF's Arabic-language Twitter account said its military was "moving" against Iranian targets in Syria and warned Damascus not to intervene.

The timing of the attempted Iranian retaliation against Israel, which coincided with Trump's announcement he would ditch the nuclear agreement, suggests the Iranians were planning to make good on their promise to deliver "special surprises" whenever the U.S. would quit the deal.

On May 7th, the day before Trump's announcement, Israeli Multiple-Launch Rocket Systems (MLRS) were photographed, reportedly in the Golan Heights.

"Some" of the incoming rockets were intercepted, and damage on the Israeli side was minimal, Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus said, according to The Associated Press.

Amos Gilead, a retired senior Israeli defense official, told a security conference in the coastal town of Herzliya that Iran's intentions in Syria meant a wider conflagration may only be a matter of time.

Israel has ordered bomb shelters prepared on the Golan Heights and the government is bracing for an Iranian response to the latest attack on Iran's forces in Syria.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says aircraft flew over the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, adjacent to southern Syria.

Israel has been warning for weeks that it will not accept Iran entrenching itself militarily in neighbouring Syria, where Tehran is supporting President Bashar al-Assad's regime in the civil war.

There was no comment on the strikes from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), which rarely confirms or denies its operations in Syria. They are trying to transfer forces and deadly weapons there with the explicit goal of attacking the State of Israel.
