The warmest May Bank Holiday Monday on record was 23.6C, in 1999.

Met Office forecaster Craig Snell told Metro: "So far today, London and the south east is getting the hottest temperatures in the UK".

He said: "Average temperatures should be about 15C (59F) so they are about 10C (50F) above average for this time of year".

As temperatures continue to rise, today could be a multiple record breaker for hot Bank Holiday weekends - but the heat is not good news for everyone.

Temperatures peaked on Sunday at 26C in Northolt in north-west London.
