Sajid Javid faces huge challenges as new home secretary

ANALYSISApril 30 2018 5:00pm The Times Amber Rudd’s departure alters the cabinet balance on Brexit Oliver Wright Policy Editor

Prime Minister Theresa may was appointed to the post of the head of the Ministry of internal Affairs of the former Minister of state for communities and local government, Sajid Javid.

Javid - who backed the Remain campaign, but has since said his "heart" was for Brexit and spoken out against customs union membership - will immediately be tasked with sorting out the Windrush scandal, ensuring that migrants are able to obtain their United Kingdom citizenship as well as establishing a compensation scheme for those who have been affected.

Asked if she should take some personal responsibility for 52-year-old Rudd's resignation, May said today: "When I was home secretary, yes, there were targets in terms of removing people from the country who were here illegally".

The pressure had been building on the former banker ever since the emergence of the "appalling" treatment of Caribbean immigrants to the United Kingdom between the 1940s and 1970s - the so-called Windrush generation.

Rudd said she didn't see the memo, but The Guardian later published a leaked letter she wrote to the prime minister discussing an aim of increasing removals by 10 percent.

National Football League veteran Witten calls time on Cowboys
Warner may be miffed that the tiebreaker wasn't skill or experience but the fact that Witten played for the Dallas Cowboys . Ultimately, he opted to retire to start a new chapter in his life after one of the most successful runs in Cowboys history.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn told the Prime Minister on Monday she now has "questions to answer" about her time in the Home Office following the resignation of her "human shield" Ms Rudd.

She said the new home secretary cannot be used as a "human shield" for Theresa May.

Highlighting his status as a second-generation migrant, the Home Secretary described how the row has "affected me greatly", adding: "I thought that that could be my mum, my brother, my uncle or even me".

While the appointment of Javid tips the balance of May's war cabinet in favor of a harder Brexit, ultimately Parliament could end up deciding what kind of divorce Britain gets.

They and subsequent Caribbean migrants came from British colonies or ex-colonies and had an automatic right to settle in the U.K. But some have now been denied housing, jobs or medical treatment because of requirements that employers and doctors check people's immigration status.

So, instead of rehashing NBA Classics, we're checking out those two most recent playoff series (both of which went the distance). What happened this year to get the Bucks to where they are? We can't ignore the run the Sixers went on at the end of the year.

Himself a second generation migrant whose parents came to the United Kingdom from Pakistan, Javid has made clear that this is personal.

Although Mr Javid stopped short of promising an overhaul of Mrs May's policies, he said: "I think the (hostile) terminology is incorrect, I think it's a phrase that is unhelpful and does not represent the values as a country".

"And yet, they've deported a British citizen from my constituency to somewhere else".

But her departure also sparked some calls for a change of tack on immigration, with former ministers Nick Boles and Anna Soubry both urging Mr Javid to rethink the Government's approach.

He also committed "to a fair and humane immigration policy that celebrates those that have come here legally but also clamps down decisively on illegal immigration". It forced a mini-reshuffle with James Brokenshire replacing Mr Javid as communities secretary, three months after he stepped down as Northern Ireland secretary to receive lung cancer treatment.

TMZ reporter Van Lathan shot back and called West's comments the "absence of thought". Slavery is to blacks as the Holocaust is to Jews.

But she felt it "necessary" to tender her resignation after the emergence of documents, addressed to her office, showing those goals were in place.
