UK Home Secretary Rudd resigns over immigration scandal

Labour's shadow home secretary Diane Abbott said Ms Rudd should quit as Home Secretary over the fiasco

The Government has been accused of trying to save Amber Rudd's career with "semantics" after her former deputy claimed her policy of ramping up the deportation of illegal immigrants was an "ambition" not a "target".

Rudd delivered an unprecedented apology to parliament over the Windrush scandal and acknowledged that her department had "lost sight of individuals" and become "too concerned with policy".

The Home Affairs Select Committee questioned Rudd last week over quotas for removal of the Windrush generation, the first large group of Caribbean migrants to arrive in the United Kingdom after World War II.

May's government recently said the Home Office destroyed landing documents for Caribbean immigrants, meaning some of them and their children faced deportation after decades living in Britain because they don't have the correct paperwork.

"Amber Rudd knew of the targets she pretended didn't exist", the shadow interior minister Diane Abbott said.

It is nothing short of tragic for the life of a human being to be in the hands of someone other than oneself or one's own family. For all the talk of a "right" to healthcare in this country, it is surprising that there is not more concern over this issue.

Yvette Cooper, chairman of the Home Affairs Committee, who questioned Ms Rudd about targets, tweeted: "Well this is clearly not true".

On Wednesday, Ms Rudd told the home affairs committee: "We do not have targets for removals".

Colleagues came to her defence on Saturday, with Justice Secretary David Gauke telling Sky News he was confident Ms Rudd had not meant to mislead anyone over whether she knew about migrant removal targets.

Long-time British residents who arrived from the Caribbean between 1948 and 1971 have feared losing access to medical treatment or even being deported during the scandal.

Her first Tory conference speech as Home Secretary, in 2016, was reported as a hate incident to police after she suggested that companies should be forced to disclose how many foreign workers they employ.

Live, feel, love, laugh, cry, play, win, lose, stumble, fall, but keep rising. For the remaining games this season, I'll support my team as best I can.

"I will be reallocating £10m (including from low-level crime and intelligence) with the aim of increasing the number of enforced removals by more than 10% or over the next years" something I believe is ambitious, but deliverable."
"It's time for Rudd to go and for the government to rethink its whole approach".

"There are impact statements that have been ignored, there are letters from MPs and she said she wasn't aware of a pattern".

However, in an interview with the Sunday Telegraph, he said the government was committed to "put things right" and he urged ethnic minority voters to look at the "bigger picture" when it came to Thursday's vote.

The prime minister made clear her government's policy towards illegal migrants would not change. "Those internal targets were not in the memo and not figures that she was aware of".

In recent weeks both Rudd and May have apologized repeatedly to the Windrush generation, saying all pre-1973 Commonwealth immigrants who don't already have British citizenship will get it, and those affected will get compensation.
