Sabres follow last place-finish by landing No. 1 draft pick

New York Rangers rebuild starts with Draft Lottery

The Buffalo Sabres followed a season filled with losses by finally winning something - the National Hockey League draft lottery - and landing the No. 1 pick for just third time in franchise history.

As with every year, the biggest question heading into the NHL's Draft Lottery night was which team would be lucky enough to land the number one pick, and secure the coveted Rasmus Dahlin.

The Oilers attempt to #MakeItFive fell short but, let's be real - with four first overall picks since 2010, Edmonton was the last team that deserved to draft Dahlin.

The Carolina Hurricanes will have the second pick, and the Montreal Canadiens' name came up third. Ottawa and Arizona each slipped two spots, to fourth and fifth respectively.

The NHL Draft will take place June 22-23 in Dallas.

With the first overall selection in 1970, the Sabres selected Hall of Famer Gilbert Perrault.

The Buffalo Sabres have an 18.5 percent chance of winning the No. 1 pick. "And it's certainly going to give our players a little jump".

Scouting bureau director Dan Marr regards Dahlin as "the clear-cut No. 1, pro-ready prospect".

The prescription medication she was taking for the stress and anxiety likely contributed to her death at 46, he said. A law enforcement official said at a press conference that the book "kept interest and tips coming in".

The Hurricanes are in a state of flux under new team owner Tom Dundon. Last week, coach Bill Peters announced his resignation and was then hired by the Calgary Flames on Monday.

On an oddly scheduled Saturday night, half of the teams in the league found out where they would pick in this year's entry draft.

The Canadiens will select third for the second time since drafting Alex Galchenyuk at that position in 2012.

The Flyers have had two first-round selections three times since 2003.
