He said: I would like to express my deepest sympathy at this moment of loss to Tom and Kate as we hold little Alfie in our prayers. During that time, he was kept alive by artificial ventilation in the critical care unit.

A statement released by Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool read "All of us feel deeply for Alfie, Kate, Tom and his whole family and our thoughts are with them".

A court decided on Tuesday that Alfie was too wiped out to possibly be taken to doctor's facility at the Vatican and nothing had changed since the past decision. The parents disagreed, and his case was referred to the Family Division of the United Kingdom court, only for the court to rule in favor of the hospital. High Court Justice Anthony Hayden dismissed the parents' case, saying his ruling was "the final chapter in the life of this extraordinary little boy".

Support for the toddler grew by the minute all over the globe.

Liverpool legend urges Gerrard to take Rangers job
He had a massive amount of experience as a player - I think I would talk to him as well if I owned a club. When you're starting out, it's all about when you feel the time is right.

On Wednesday, judges on the UK Court of Appeal ruled against Alfie's family, following a decision by the High Court on Tuesday that prevented Alfie from leaving Britain for further medical treatment.

It is nothing short of tragic for the life of a human being to be in the hands of someone other than oneself or one's own family.

Alfie's parents heavily criticized both the outcome of the court case and the medical staff at Alder Hey Children's Hospital, where Alfie had been since December 2016, calling their son a "prisoner". Alder Hey asked for tributes to Alfie to be left in a park next door so the hospital's work wasn't disrupted.

Although the past few weeks have been hard with much activity on social media, we must recognise that all who have played a part in Alfie's life have wanted to act for his good, as they see it.

Alfie garnered worldwide attention during his family's legal battle, even drawing attention from Pope Francis, who tweeted Saturday that he was "deeply moved" by Alfie's death.

The child's life support was withdrawn on Monday following orders by the High Court.

For all the talk of a "right" to healthcare in this country, it is surprising that there is not more concern over this issue. Ideological consistency is lacking in today's politics.

The case drew worldwide support, with Pope Francis even publicly asking Britain to grant the parents' wishes.

British interior minister faces calls to resign after…
She said she had told the Home Office to take a more proactive role to help people from the Windrush generation in future. She added that there was "nothing wrong" with trying to remove people who were here illegally, according to the Guardian.

Under British law, courts are asked to intervene when parents and doctors disagree on the treatment of a child. In Aviv's story on guardianship among the elderly, it plays out in a more prosaic and yet similarly shocking form - with old people who are hardly incompetent handed over to professional guardians who sell their assets and consign them to assisted living facilities from which they can't escape.
