Inspectors yet to enter Douma, US says

Trump risks political blowback from his base on Syria

Syria will allow chemical inspectors to examine the site of a suspected chemical weapons attack on Wednesday, 11 days after the alleged attack took place and two days after they were turned away for suspicious reasons, BBC News is reporting.

The US has voiced concerns though that Moscow may have already "tampered" with evidence in Douma where more than 40 people died.

The Syrian Central Media said six missiles targeted the Shayrat air base in Homs on Tuesday, adding that Syrian air defences shot down a lot of them.

Nauert said she was aware of reports from Syria that inspectors from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons had been able to see the site but "our understanding is that the team has not entered Douma".

"We are obviously keen to make sure that the inspectors have every means that they can to carry out their job and carry out their investigation as soon as possible".

"Even if the OPCW team is able to visit Douma to gather information to make that assessment - and they are now being prevented from doing so by the regime and the Russians - it can not attribute responsibility", she said. A odd smell lingered, nine days after the attack. Ahmed Abed al-Nafaa said helicopters were flying before the attack and when he reached the site, people were screaming "chlorine".

Five more athletes missing from Commonwealth Games village
The Commonwealth Games Federation has stated the athletes would be monitored, however they have the right to travel freely. Games officials say the athletes have not yet officially breached their visas, which do not expire until May 15.

State TV broadcast the rally live from the central Omayyad Square. Peskov said only that Russian Federation was against "groundless" accusations about who was responsible for the attack.

The military experts I've heard say that Syria is nowhere near winning the civil war.

She also said she's not impressed with the reaction of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who expressed support for the strikes but seems reluctant to get directly involved. The OPCW team does not have a mandate to assign blame for the attack. Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mikdad met with members of the watchdog group in their Damascus hotel Sunday.

Regionally, at the Arab League summit over the weekend, the strikes were discussed and Iraq was one of the few countries to condemn them.

Government forces and Russian troops have been deployed in Douma, which is now controlled by the Syrian government. Russian Federation denies the accusations.

"I can guarantee that Russian Federation has not tampered with the site", Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told the BBC.

Alexander Shulgin, the Russian envoy at the OPCW in The Hague, said allegations that Russia might destroy evidence reflected Washington's effort to justify Saturday's strikes.

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: The objective of our actions tonight is to establish a strong deterrent against the production, spread and use of chemical weapons. "Our American partners are clearly getting nervous".

Assad told a group of visiting Russian lawmakers that the strikes were accompanied by a campaign of "lies and misinformation" against Syria and Russia in the U.N. Security Council.

The UK's representative Peter Wilson said: "It is imperative that the Syrian Arab Republic and the Russian Federation offer the OPCW fact finding mission team their full co-operation and assistance to carry out their hard task".

The renewed push for a UN-backed diplomatic solution follows a volatile emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, called by Moscow on Saturday, in which Russian Federation condemned the strikes as a violation of worldwide law.

Sunday morning, the president was back on Twitter defending the tweet.
