Red Bull's Ricciardo wins Chinese GP

F1 news featuring Daniel Ricciardo

It looked like Ricciardo was set for another disappointing weekend in China too after a blown engine in Saturday's final practice session nearly caused him to miss qualifying.

Formula One - F1 - Chinese Grand Prix - Shanghai, China - April 1-5, 2018 - Red Bull motorist Daniel Ricciardo of Australia crosses the checkered flag to win the race.

After the safety auto was deployed on Lap 31 when the two Toro Rossos collided the Red Bulls pitted straight away to go onto the softs, having earlier moved to mediums, and in the latter stages of the race that proved to be the difference.

While all this was going on, Ricciardo was relentlessly hunting down Bottas, and he clinically passed the Mercedes to take the lead on lap 45.

"Occasionally I wonder why I chose this game simply because there' s therefore lots of activities out of one's control plus it'll get you down lots of".

"I don't seem to win boring races!", an emotional Ricciardo said on the podium.

In the constructors' stakes, Mercedes now have a one-point advantage over Ferrari, 85 to 84, with Red Bull moving into a clear third place on 55. Yeah, frustrated at the sport, frustrated at all the variables that are involved in the sport.

Cynthia Nixon accepts endorsement from NY's Working Families Party
It's possible that pressure from progressives and people like Nixon are convincing him to possibly evolve on the issue. Despite the attention here campaign's received online, most polls show her trailing Cuomo by almost 50 points.

"That was obviously giving us a good little bit of grip on the restart", Ricciardo said. Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) +8,8943.

Back at the front Ricciardo raced up to race leader Bottas' rear wing before he squeezed up the inside to lead, and win, the Chinese Grand Prix. He led for the first 20 laps but fell back, first due to a pit stop and then after a collision with Red Bull's Max Verstappen on the 43rd lap. That wouldn't be the end of Verstappen's eventful day; on lap 43 he collected Sebastian Vettel at Turn 14 which saw him slapped with a 10 second time penalty.

Mercedes' Hamilton missed out on the podium for the first time this season, crossing the line fifth behind Verstappen.

Vettel managed to pull out of DRS range and hold his lead at around three seconds through the opening stint of the race ahead of Bottas on the Soft compound tyre. Bottas has 40 points in third place and Ricciardo is fourth with 37. "Kimi is quite aggressive" Hamilton said over the radio, but the team urged him to keep his head down. And for a while, Ferrari fans may have felt he was on course to subdue his countryman's imperious race pace, with the SF 71H just as fast as the Silver Arrows in the latter stages.

Bottas acknowledged Mercedes still "has work to do".

As the Red Bulls charged, Hamilton pointed out to his team in the pits that they had been caught out by not stopping to change what was the slowest tyre which already had significant life on it. "Just depending on the conditions and whoever gets the tires and the set up right".

"We were going pretty well and we were looking strong until the safety auto", he said.

The set included Bon Jovi classics such as "You Give Love a Bad Name", "It's My Life", "When We Were Us" and "Livin' on a Prayer". The band paid tribute to the late founding bassist and co-lead singer with a performance that inlcluded his biggest songs.

"Two minutes after yesterday and we'd have begun the race today from the back... That is racing. These things happen".

Meanwhile Raikkonen's team-mate Vettel was having problems of his own, with Nico Hulkenberg pulling away and Fernando Alonso closing.

Renault's Carlos Sainz and Haas's Kevin Magnussen completed the top 10 in a race that will live very long in the memory.

Ricciardo claimed his sixth career F1 win.

What a difference a week makes.

While Ricciardo's moves to rise to second had been spectacular, the Red Bull driver left the best until last.

"This sport's insane", he said.
