During the 1960s Forman established himself as a director of the dissident Czech New Wave, which took aim at the communist regime, with three classic comedies: "Black Peter", "Loves of a Blonde" and "The Firemen's Ball".
He moved to the US following his native country's "Prague Spring" uprising against the Communist regime in 1968; he became a USA citizen in the 1970s.
His career overseas started with "Taking Off" in 1971, followed by "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" four years later, which brought him his first "best director" Oscar.
He won a second Oscar for the 1984 extravaganza "Amadeus", a biopic of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, which won a clutch of Academy awards.

In another adaptation, this time from an E. L. Doctorow novel and nominated for eight Oscars, Forman explored the roots of racism in the United States via an epic 1900s fresco set in and around NY following a black jazz pianist's experience of deep injustice and his radical rebellion, with fatal consequences. "Not until much later, when I was suddenly far from my homeland and its culture, far away from my family, when I was cut away from the land of my childhood, I realized I shared this strong feeling of affection for my country with them", Forman had said, according to his biography.
In 1989, Forman wrote and directed Valmont, which starred Colin Firth and Annette Bening in an adaptation of the 1782 novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses.
The Czech government, realizing the money to be made by letting Amadeus be filmed in Prague, allowed Forman to come home, and the public hailed his return.
With some trepidation, Forman returned to Czechoslovakia to make "Amadeus" because Prague was one of the few European cities that had been little changed since Mozart's time. He also shot a film version, released internationally in 2009.
