Pakistan bans ousted PM Nawaz Sharif from parliament for life

NAB alleges the road was constructed in connivance with Punjab CM Shehbaz Sharif for his personal benefit in 1998

Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) chief Dr Tahirul Qadri on Friday welcomed the Supreme Court's verdict of disqualifying former prime minister Nawaz Sharif for life in case pertaining to determining the length of disqualification.

Let it be known that a five-member bench of the top court headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar and comprising Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed, Justice Umar Ata Bandial, Justice Ijazul Ahsan and Justice Sajjad Ali Shah voted 5-0 in favour of lifetime disqualification for lawmakers disqualified under article 62 (1) (f) of the constitution.

The verdict stated, "the absence of a time limit for the ineligibility of a candidate for election in Article 62 (1)(f) of the Constitution is the basis for holding his incapacity to be incurable by efflux of time, the reasons recorded in our judgment reinforce that conclusion".

Pakistan's Supreme Court has disqualified Nawas Sharfi, who was the Prime Minister of Pakistan, from retaining a Public office.

A five-member bench of the country's apex court unanimously ruled on Friday that anyone disqualified under a constitutional clause requiring legislators to be "honest and trustworthy" would be considered banned for life.

The Supreme Court barred Sharif, 67, from politics in July over an undeclared source of income, but the veteran leader maintains his grip on the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party, even though he is no longer its leader.

For Sharif's supporters, they see the Supreme Court as acting in tandem with the army to ensure that he can not re-emerge in Pakistan's politics.

However, the only real way to bring Nawaz Sharif back to office is if "they come into power through the election and amend the constitution", said former Justice Shaiq Usmani. He was the 15th Prime Minister. Such a person can not contest elections or become a member of parliament.

Sharif's PML-N, which continues to hold a strong majority in parliament, termed the decision an attack on democracy.

Marriyum Aurangzeb, the minister of information, denounced the verdict.
