Yvonne Staples, Member and Manager of the Staple Singers, Dies at 80

She performed with her sisters Mavis and Cleotha and their father, Pops, on hits such as "Respect Yourself" and "I'll Take You There, " their first No. 1 hit.

The Staples Singers had been made up of her sister Marvis and Cleotha and their dad Pops Staples.

The family act began in the late-1940s by singing in local Chicago churches. Together, the group crossed the lines between gospel, pop, funk and soul. She is survived by her brother, Pervis Staples, and her sister, Mavis Staples.

Yvonne and the Staples were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999 and the Gospel Hall of Fame this year along with receiving a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005.

In the beginning the team played a Blues song, but then switched to sustainable urbanistskaya pop and soul. "The family group's music was a vehicle for social activism, positive change and love".

Between 1971 to 1975, the Staples Singers cracked the Top 40 eight times. She was diagnosed with cancer a couple of weeks ago. Yvonne had other interests besides singing - she worked as a secretary and volunteered at a hospital for the mentally ill - but it was a make-or-break moment in the group's career, and Pops Staples called upon her one more time after Pervis Staples left to pursue a career as a music-industry executive and nightclub owner. She also has an upcoming concert at the Suffolk Theater in Riverhead, N.Y., in August.

Yvonne's older sister, Cleotha, died in 2013 of Alzheimer's disease.

"Yvonne got me", Mavis Staples later said. You've got to get up. "It woke me up". She also served as Mavis's tour manager until her final years. "Mavis is the voice.' She never cared about attention for herself".
