Saudi air defence forces intercept missile over Najran - statement

Saudi Civil Aviation Authority Signs Cooperation Deal with UK Transport Department

The location may have been selected by the kingdom to avoid Houthi missile strikes during Sunday's summit.

Loud blasts were heard in the night sky above Riyadh.

Al Masirah TV, run by Yemen's Houthis, said earlier the group had targeted a distribution facility in the city belonging to state oil giant Saudi Aramco. Two other missiles were intercepted over the southern areas of Jazan and Najran.

One of the drones was targeting the Abha global airport in Asir province, which led to a temporary suspension of air traffic, and a second was approaching a "civilian object" in Jizan province, Colonel Turki al-Malki said in a statement published by the state-run Saudi Press Agency. Saudi officials have not yet commented on the report. At least one Saudi media outlet reported a drone crash at the airport had injured two airport workers. More than 10,000 Yemenis have died in the conflict and millions in the impoverished country have been pushed to the brink of starvation.

The Houthis previous year unveiled the Qasef-1 drone, along with three other new types of drones used for surveillance and attack, claiming they were indigenously made. In a statement, the Saudi-led coalition fighting the Houthis in Yemen said it downed a drone targeting an airport in the southwestern province of Abha and another in Jazan.

The channel did not provide any details on casualties of damage from the alleged attack, however Saudi authorities said its facilities in Jizan were operating "normally and safely" following the Houthis' announcement.

Last month the Saudi army intercepted seven missiles over Riyadh launched by the rebels.
