Alleged Toronto serial killer now charged with seven counts of first-degree murder

Bruce McArthur

Alleged serial killer Bruce McArthur is now facing a seventh murder charge. The 66-year-old landscaper appeared by video in a Toronto courtroom this morning where the Crown said the new first-degree murder charge had been laid in the death of Abdulbasir Faizi.

Police arrested McArthur in January and charged him with the murders of Andrew Kinsman and Selim Esen, who went missing from Toronto's gay village in 2017.

As of Wednesday, authorities were still trying to identify some of the human remains found in planters at a Toronto property McArthur used as storage for his landscaping business, according to the Associated Press. Sources close to the victims say Selim Esen, who disappeared in the spring of 2017, is among those who have been positively identified by investigators.

Saudi air defence forces intercept missile over Najran - statement
The location may have been selected by the kingdom to avoid Houthi missile strikes during Sunday's summit. At least one Saudi media outlet reported a drone crash at the airport had injured two airport workers.

Idsinga said pathologists are working to identify the remains of at least one more person found on the property.

Later that month, McArthur was charged with the first-degree murder of Majeed Kayhan, Soroush Mahmudi, and Dean Lisowick. They've identified three sets of remains so far - those of Kinsman, Mahmudi, and Navaratnam. The Guardian reports that after his disappearance, his family accessed his computer and discovered his trips to the Gay Village and his use of gay dating apps for larger and older men. It closed after 18 months as it did not establish the whereabouts of the missing men or resolve the circumstances on their disappearances, police said.

Police also have evidence that leads them to believe that Lisowick was killed in April of 2016, he said.

Idsinga said police are now re-examining 15 cold cases dating back as far as 1975 in their investigation. Police released a digitally enhanced version of the photograph along with a rendition of what the man may have looked like during the press conference.

Police are expected Wednesday to provide an update on the photo of a dead man they released in early March, who is believed to be another victim of McArthur's.

Idsinga said it's quite possible that the victim was not a resident of Toronto and that police were hoping to get tips to the man's identity from other countries as well. The two middle-aged men were reported missing in 2017. He is scheduled to return to court April 25 to find out whether any more evidence has been turned over to the defence. In Feburary, he was also charged with Navaratnam's murder.
