Tensions rise as United States threatens Syria for chemical weapons use

Russian President Vladimir Putin talks with President Donald

President Trump is promising to act forcefully over what he says was an atrocious use of chemical weapons by the Syrian government.

Trump told a meeting with military leaders and national security advisers he would make a decision by Monday night "or very shortly thereafter" on a response, adding that the USA had "a lot of options militarily" on Syria.

Nebenzia rejected a USA call for the world body to set up a probe to identify the perpetrators of what rescuers called a "poisonous chlorine gas attack" late Saturday in the enclave of Douma, near Damascus.

Trump added that such atrocities can not be allowed to happen.

The Russian envoy said Moscow had told the United States that it would not allow its forces on the ground in Syria to be put at risk.

As President Donald Trump assesses how to respond to the alleged chemical attack in Syria that killed and maimed dozens of civilians, lawmakers disagreed Monday what an appropriate response should be and whether Trump needed their authorization before acting.

Trump is faced again with the choice of conducting a limited strike that might not even deter Assad from future chemical attacks or a wider response that risks drawing the USA deeper into a global conflict.

And, as Congress does, it can debate our objectives in this new war, and how many men, casualties and years will be required to defeat the coalition of Syria, Russia, Hezbollah, Iran, and the allied Shiite militias from the Near East.

But the president, who has long had an adversarial relationship with the news media, did not elaborate on how he planned to do so. And unlike past year , she said, the president wouldn't discourage other administration officials from attending.

Russian representative Vassily Nebenzia said the incident in Douma was staged and that USA military action in response could have "grave repercussions". "It was frightful", Trump said at the start of a Cabinet meeting where possible military action was discussed.

"More than 500 cases -the majority of whom are women and children- were brought to local medical centers with symptoms indicative of exposure to a chemical agent", SAMS said.

The French representative at the UN Security Council said poison gas had deliberately been used as it could seep down to the basements.

Trump said there was little question that Syria was responsible for the apparent weekend attack, although the government of President Bashar Assad denied it.

USA officials told Reuters that Washington was weighing a multinational military response.

"On the eve of potential U.S. and French strikes against Assad in response to the Douma gas attack, it is likely the Israelis already had the intention to strike at the T-4 base, and timed their attack to maximise the destruction they could inflict on Iranian forces", he told AFP. President Putin, Russia and Iran are responsible for backing Animal Assad.

Guiora points out that Russian Federation can veto any measure or resolution that comes before the council.

"The AUMF we're operating under now passed the week after September 11", said Sen.

Haley urged the council to take action, but warned that the United States was ready to respond, with or without the United Nations.

"We are beyond showing pictures of dead babies", said Ambassador Haley".

Israel, which has struck Syrian army locations many times in the course of its neighbour's seven-year-old civil war, has not confirmed nor denied mounting the raid yesterday.

Syrian state media and Russian Foreign Ministry did not take responsibility for Saturday's attacks in Douma.

However while Israel has followed its policy of not commenting on such claims, commentators here believe that the timing of the alleged Israeli strike was coincidental and aimed at Iranian forces rather than retribution over the use of chemical weapons.

"All sides know what is going on, and the Russians have actually been predicting USA military action over Ghouta for some time".

"Through the relevant channels we already conveyed to the United States that armed force under a mendacious pretext against Syria where - at the request of the legitimate government of a country, Russian troops have been deployed - could lead to grave repercussions".

Amid the tough talk at the White House, the USA military appeared to be in position to carry out any attack order.
