U.S. Rep. Elizabeth Esty of CT has decided not to seek reelection after it was revealed that she kept her chief of staff on the payroll even though another staffer accused him of abusive behavior that included a death threat and physical assault. Esty, who was facing calls to resign from prominent CT politicians from both parties, wrote in a Facebook post that she had decided it was in the best interest of her constituents and her family to retire from Congress at the end of the year. Her case involved a cover-up of some pretty awful behavior by her chief of staff, Tony Baker, who made a death threat on the voice mail of a former staffer, Anna Kain, whom he once dated.

After facing calls to resign from some of the state's top Democrats, Ms. Esty had earlier on Monday asked the House Ethics Committee to investigate whether she committed wrongdoing or violated any "law, rule or regulation" in her handling of the matter.

Esty, a Democrat from CT and an outspoken #MeToo advocate, was accused of not protecting female staffers from the ex-chief of staff. Esty has said she regrets not moving along an internal investigation into the allegations, which revealed more widespread allegations of abuse, and regrets providing "even the slightest assistance to this individual as he sought a new job".

Esty, a Democrat from CT and an outspoken #MeToo advocate, made the announcement not to seek a fourth term in the November election days after apologizing for not protecting her employees from the male ex-chief of staff. By his last day on August 12, according to documents Esty provided to The Post, he and Esty had co-written a positive recommendation letter he could use in a job search and signed a legal document preventing her from disparaging him or discussing why he left. "I implore the Senate to act now to pass meaningful reform".

"I just remember crying", she said.

Andrew Ricci, a friend of Baker's who has spoken on his behalf, released a statement from Baker following the news Esty would not run again.

"To the survivor, I want to express my strongest apology for letting you down", Esty said Monday.

Esty's seat was already on the DCCC's list of vulnerable incumbents, probably more because Hillary Clinton carried the district narrowly, 50 percent to 46 percent, over Donald Trump. She says the situation in her office was "terrible".

Flexer was not alone in her call for Esty to resign.

Esty spent the holiday weekend hunkering down and working the phones to gauge her political damage over her handling of the allegations, a source close to the congresswoman told CNN.

Several former Esty aides questioned the objectivity of the 2016 internal investigation, saying that Sweet had hired Baker as Esty's legislative director after the two had previously worked for Rep.

Baker was sacked three months after an internal investigation was completed. The congresswoman had said Friday that she had no plans to resign. She also reportedly signed a nondisclosure agreement preventing her from speaking ill of him or discussing why he left. According to the Connecticut Post, Baker also received $5,000 in severance, which Esty said she repaid to the US Treasury.
