Trump ousts David Shulkin, announces Ronny Jackson as VA secretary

Not Released

Jackson's bio sheet shows no executive-level experience to justify the pick.

But a major veterans' organization expressed concern over Shulkin's dismissal and Trump's intention to nominate Jackson, whom they anxious lacked experience to run the huge department.

Speculation mounts that the embattled Veterans Affairs secretary could be the next member of President Trump's administration to be replaced; national security correspondent Jennifer Griffin reports from the Pentagon.

"In recent months ... the environment in Washington has turned so toxic, chaotic, disrespectful and subversive that it became impossible for me to accomplish the important work that our veterans need and deserve", Shulkin wrote in an op-ed published by the New York Times. He wrote, "They saw me as an obstacle to privatization who had to be removed".

He argued that the private sector was not sufficient to provide care for veterans and that privatizing the agency would hurt existing military hospitals.

Hundreds of thousands of veterans, many who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder. It found that during a trip to London and Denmark he improperly accepted tickets to the Wimbledon tennis tournament and his chief of staff made false statements so Shulkin's wife could travel at government expense.

Saudi Arabia Threatens Iran, Blaming Them for Yemeni Missiles
Over 14,000 Yemenis, including thousands of women and children, have lost their lives in the deadly military campaign. France on Thursday accused Iran of supplying weapons to Huthi rebels fighting a Saudi-led coalition in Yemen.

"We've said to Cerner Corporation we are not going to sign a contract that's going to allow proprietary protection and information blocking to continue", said Shulkin during the hearing.

The Hill has reached out to the White House for comment. Committee Chairman Rep. Phil Roe, R-Tenn., instead gave the secretary a strong endorsement.

Lawmakers and major veterans organizations expressed concern Wednesday night about Jackson's nomination. Many of them lauded his service on the evening he was sacked. It was clear that the debate on private-sector health care was a touch point in Shulkin's rift with political appointees.

Trump said he appreciated Shulkin's work, including passage of the VA Accountability Act."He has been a great supporter of veterans across the country and I am grateful for his service", Trump said in a statement.

Trump said on Twitter on Wednesday that a Defense Department official would run the VA on an interim basis while Trump's pick of Ronny Jackson is considered by the Senate. The estrangement became so wide that the secretary had recently been conducting his own crisis communications effort via his personal cell phone, telling reporters that there were political staffers working to oust him.

Shulkin, who was confirmed as VA secretary a little over a year ago, was the last remaining holdover from the Obama administration. In 2016, he criticized a "strawman" report from outside health advisers appointed to recommend ways to improve veteran services. Besides its vast health care system, the agency operates 135 national veterans cemeteries and is responsible for distributing monetary benefits to millions of veterans each month. The congressionally created Commission on Care eventually rejected this minority view, in part at Shulkin's urging.

Aaron Judge Inks Endorsement Deal With adidas
New York's rotation will look strikingly similar as it did past year when they were one of the best in the American League. Despite missing a month of action due to injury a year ago , Sanchez still contributed 33 home runs and 90 RBIs.

"P$3 rivatization leading to the dismantling of the department's extensive health care system is a awful idea", he wrote.

Trump praised Shulkin as "fantastic" when he chose him to head the VA in January 2017.

A native of Levelland, Texas, Jackson graduated from the medical school at the University of Texas Medical Branch and began his active naval service in 1995. In 2005, he joined the 2nd Marines, Combat Logistics Regiment 25, and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom as the emergency medicine physician in charge of resuscitative medicine for a Surgical Shock Trauma Platoon, according to the White House.

Shulkin understood the intricacies of a wide array of veteran programs when he appeared before Congress or met with veteran groups.

A number of other current and former Trump administration officials have also been caught up in ethics scandals including former Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt, Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, and Energy Secretary Rick Perry. Shulkin adds that privatization of the VA is at its root a "political issue aimed at rewarding select people and companies with profits, even if it undermines care for veterans".

"I've made the decision to reimburse the Treasury, to follow the IG recommendations and I'm committed to doing what we have to do to focus on veterans and make this better", he said.
