Egypt's Sisi poised to sweep president poll

Egypt’s three-day presidential election begins Monday

Egypt's President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi is set to be re-elected for a second term, partial results suggest, APA reported citing BBC News.

State-run media trumpeted Sisi's victory early on Thursday, predicting a "big turnout", and radio programmes said that most of the voters were from Egypt's fast-growing youth. Two million voters also cast ballots for candidates who were not on the ballot, according to Al Ahram newspaper.

In the Nile Delta governorate of Gharbiya, El-Sisi obtained 90 percent of the vote, with a turnout of more than 50 percent, Egypt's state news agency MENA said.

He faces only one adversary, Moussa Mustafa Moussa, who has previously voiced support for Al-Sisi.

The government has hoped for high turnout to lend the election legitimacy, and has staggered the voting over three days.

After the polls closed on Wednesday evening, el-Sissi issued a statement saying he was proud of the Egyptian people's behavior during the election.

Some voters said they had received payments and other inducements to cast their ballots.

Reuters correspondents, meanwhile, said they have witnessed multiple cases of state institutions, lawmakers, private businesses, and pro-Sisi individuals seeking to reward voters or make it seem turnout is higher than it actually was.

"The scenes of the Egyptians outside polling stations will remain sources of honour and pride for me, and conclusive evidence of the greatness of our nation", Sisi posted on his Facebook page right after the poll closure.

A former defense minister, al-Sisi spearheaded a 2013 military coup that unseated Mohamed Morsi, Egypt's first democratically elected president and a leader of the Muslim Brotherhood group.

The final result will be officially announced by the National Election Authority in a press conference Monday.

Egyptian authorities and media outlets have tried to garner as many votes as possible, telling voters it is their duty, and portraying a failure to vote as betrayal of their country.

'I drive people to their polling stations, wait for them, and then take them back to collect the money, ' said one driver.
