Jaguar and Waymo just announced an electric, fully autonomous vehicle

Customers will be able to hail a self-driving I-PACE starting in late 2018 in Phoenix Arizona

Even more heartfelt thanks to ensue, we'd imagine.

"We want to build a self-driving vehicle for every passenger and every trip", Waymo CEO John Krafcik said at a press event at Chelsea Piers in New York City. Waymo has already been testing its ride-hailing service in the Phoenix metro area since late previous year, through a program designed for residents (you need to apply online to become an "early rider"). Earlier this year, it announced it was also ordering thousands of Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans for its fleet. The SUVs will be earmarked for Waymo's autonomous taxi service, and the two companies estimate that they could handle up to 1 million trips daily once they're on the road. Waymo reports that the self-driving minivans are equipped with its software that has been tested on 5 million miles of roads, and billions of miles in simulation. Uber has stopped testing its self-driving technology on city streets, and so has Toyota.

Boasting 294kW and 696Nm from its twin electric motors, the I-PACE takes just 4.8 seconds to reach 100km/h. The service will roll out in a 100 square-mile radius - about one-sixth the size of the metropolitan area - growing to 600 square miles later on.

Villanova tops Texas Tech to earn a trip to the Final Four
And it'll be the same plan next week if Evans and the Red Raiders complete their improbable journey with a bid to the Final Four. As of Sunday morning, the Wildcats are getting 64 percent of the wagers on this game as the favorite against Texas Tech .

Meanwhile, everything in an electric auto is already drive-by-wire. "That's the world we're building". Waymo so far has relied on these little toy cars.

Mr. Krafcik declined to say whether he thought the crash was a setback for the industry or whether new regulations are needed.

Waymo, named for a new way forward in mobility, was formerly the Google self-driving vehicle project.

First non-stop flight between Australia and the United Kingdom lands early
It means the old route time, which involved stopping off in Singapore or the Middle East, has been cut by around three hours. Aviation consultant John Strickland said the launch of the flights is a significant moment for the airline industry.

Jaguar Land Rover chief executive Ralf Speth said the company had been approached by Waymo about the project.

The ride-hailing network of Waymo's autonomous vehicles will compete with Uber and Lyft, which are also working on developing their own self-driving technology. The first collaboration of a planned long-term partnership with British carmaker Jaguar Land Rover, the Jaguar I-PACE will form part of Waymo's autonomous vehicle fleet in 2020 after testing begins later this year. It's now only open to "Early Riders", who have been testing it for months.
