Rand Paul exposes waste in the $1.3 trillion omnibus spending bill

Rand Paul Twitter

With Congress teetering on the brink of its third government shutdown in three months, Sen.

Today's signing by the president follows the previously reported House passage (March 22) and Senate passage after midnight on March 23 with a bipartisan vote of 65-32. "The preservation of Title II, Part A funding will help ensure principals continue to have access to high-quality preparation, professional development, and mentorship opportunities". They can't stop the bill indefinitely.

Senator Rand Paul is fired up and voted against the bill. "No one has read it. Congress is broken." he tweeted along with a photo of himself holding the entire printed omnibus.

Thus, his conservative agenda was stripped away, in a pragmatic move to take the "throw him out of the WH" pressure.

However, Friday afternoon he agreed to sign the bill, because it would increase military spending, something he has championed. Along with the recent GOP tax cuts law, the bill that stood a foot tall at some lawmakers' desks ushers in the return of $1 trillion deficits.

An estimated 5.7 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's dementia in 2018, according to the Alzheimer's Association . Almost half of all caregivers who provide help to older adults do so for someone with Alzheimer's or another dementia.

"I will never sign another bill like this again", he said.

David Perdue, R-Ga., who opposes the bill and speaks regularly to Trump. "The finishing touches came out, uh, this week, and we have a hard deadline we're working up against", House Speaker Paul Ryan said.

White House legislative director Marc Short framed it as a compromise.

"There are a lot of things that we shouldn't have had in this bill, but were in a sense forced [to have] if we want to build our military. Only through a healthy investment in science can we develop more resilient food systems that protects the well-being of farmers and consumers".

This isn't the first time Paul has held up a spending bill.

In two conversations with McClatchy, Paul said he'd make up his mind after he sees the $1.3 trillion spending plan, which Republican leaders had hoped to produce last week but were working round the clock with Democrats to finish Wednesday.

But even that remained a hard sell.

"Would you vote for another Republican again?"

It was a sign of the entrenched GOP divisions that have made Ryan's job governing the majority hard.
