Trump praises MBS over ties, arms sales

US President Donald Trump holds a lunch meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and members of his delegation at the White House in Washington DC

Trump praised US defense sales to Saudi Arabia in his meeting with the powerful crown prince, who is likely to eventually succeed King Salman as leader of the Gulf kingdom.

In addition to meeting with President Trump on Tuesday, MBS will also meet with Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI), and Mike Pompeo, selected by Trump as the next Secretary of State. Trump praised the prince over US-Saudi relations, and especially over all the weapons Saudi Arabia is buying. The deal is coming up [for sanctions relief renewal] in one month, and you will see what happens.

Riyadh expressed its nuclear ambitions in 2009 when a royal degree said that "the development of atomic energy is essential to meet the Kingdom's growing requirement for energy to generate electricity". Prince laughed on the way Trump was describing the defence deals between the two countries.

At 32 years old, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman controls a vast fortune, a well-heeled military and the future of a nation in the throes of sweeping economic and social change.

Trump and MBS, as he is known in Washington's corridors of power, have seen eye-to-eye on concerns about Iran's military activism, Middle East peace, relaxing Saudi Arabia's deeply conservative laws and over their love for mega-investments. "We believe that the opportunities are huge", he said.

African leaders set to launch continental trade deal
Buhari on March 18, canceled his scheduled visit to Rwanda to attend an Extra-Ordinary Summit of the African Union on March 21. Obasanjo also stressed the importance of intra-African trade for Africa's economic development.

But an all-out PR campaign created to burnish the prince's image, and declarations that "relations have never been better", mask several problems that could spoil the honeymoon.

The Senate rejected an attempt Tuesday to force the U.S.to cease "hostilities" in Yemen, allowing Mr. Trump to continue aiding the Saudi-led coalition in the fight.

Trump ducked a question about the issue.

Showing a sign to journalists at the meeting that read "12.5 billion in finalized sales to Saudi Arabia", Trump boasted about all the money that United States defense contractors would be getting for their products.

The crown prince oversaw the invasion of Yemen as defense minister in 2015.

Cruz was also said to be upset that his mother, Lynda Cruz, would not let him get an identification card required to buy a gun. He also told the clinician he owned only a pellet gun and was not capable of doing "serious harm" to anyone.

In December, Saudi Arabia was able to intercept an Iranian missile launched by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen, preventing it from entering Riyadh, potentially causing many casualties.

But the most delicate discussions could be about Saudi Arabia's nuclear programme, which is mooted as civilian-focused but could quickly become a platform for building a weapon. "And Saudi Arabia appreciates that", he added.

After his visit to Washington, Mohammed will embark on a nationwide tour, visiting New York, Boston, oil hub Houston, Los Angeles and Silicon Valley.

The reason why he was warmly welcomed on his visit to Britain, and is now welcomed in the U.S., is because he began implementing his planned program two years ago.
