Life in North Korea: What you are allowed to see

US pushes on with NKorea summit prep, but what is Kim's plan?

North Korea has broken its silence on the diplomatic thaw with Washington and Seoul, saying it is driving the "peace offensive" and rejecting suggestions that sanctions forced it to the negotiating table.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has congratulated Vladimir Putin on his re-election as the President of Russian Federation.

North Korea also dismissed suggestions worldwide sanctions were the cause of improved ties in a commentary published by the country's official Korean Central News Agency, instead saying diplomatic efforts were a sign of Pyongyang's strength and confidence.

North Korea has commented for the first time on the recent rapprochement on the peninsula, saying warming relations with Seoul and Washington are thanks to its "proactive measure and peace-loving proposal".

With Trump's recent sacking of several key administration officials, including former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, experts are asking whether this will result in a more hawkish USA foreign policy.

A majority of American voters, 65 percent, said in a Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday that tensions between the USA and North Korea will be resolved diplomatically, compared to 16 percent who think it will require military force.

Moon and Kim are planning an inter-Korean summit in late April at Peace House, a South Korean conference hall inside Panmunjom, the so-called truce village that straddles the Demilitarized Zone, or DMZ, separating the two Koreas. "And depending on their outcomes, they may lead to a three-way summit of South, North and U.S.", he said after a preparatory meeting for the inter-Korean summit.

It said Pyongyang's overtures came from a position of strength, not from weakness, even as it confronts intense global pressure as well as biting economic sanctions over its nuclear weapons program.

While presiding over a meeting Wednesday of government officials preparing for the inter-Korean summit, Moon attached great significance to the venue for his coming meeting with Kim. South Korean officials who met with Kim in Pyongyang to discuss the upcoming summits said he indicated he is willing to discuss denuclearization, but the lack of confirmation from Pyongyang has led to concern over what Kim may actually be willing to negotiate.

The commentary specifically denied claims that North Korea made an about-face with no concessions from Washington because Trump's "maximum pressure" strategy had pushed it to the point beyond which it can no longer sustain itself.

The commentary called on all parties involved to act with "prudence, self-control and patience".
