Google Announces $300 Million Plan to Combat Fake News

Google looks to turn product searches into cash

Not only will the tech giant seek to combat the spread of fake news during elections with the scheme, but it will also launch a tool to allow readers to subscribe to various media outlets via the click of a button on Google. Google is serious about supporting these goals, too, pledging to invest $300 million over the next three years.

Talking about the Google News Initiative first, the company believes that fake news is still a persistent issue despite efforts from its part and from other platforms like Facebook and Twitter to weed them out over the years, especially since the U.S. presidential election.

Google is now letting retailers list their products on Google Search in exchange for a cut of transaction revenue, according to a blog post by the company.

Instead, this just puts a fancy and familiar name to numerous bits and pieces of Google - from AMP to commenting products to publisher requests around reader insights to working groups to various product tests - that touch publishers.

The proliferation of "fake news" a year ago led Google to improve ranking on problematic Search results by using human evaluators and providing more tools to flag bad results. The first one will look to combat misinformation during breaking news situations. It sees Google trying to increase the output and promotion of quality journalism as it tries to "build a stronger future for news" and fight the spread of inaccurate information.

Trump attacks fairness of Mueller probe
Dick Durbin, D-Ill., called for the passage of bipartisan bills created to protect Mueller that have stalled in Congress. Any dismissal of Mueller would have to be carried out by Rosenstein, who has publicly expressed his support for Mueller.

The Google News Initiative continues with that work to downplay specious "news" articles in search results.

Last but not least, GNI aims to "empower news organizations through technological innovation".

"We think that having to log in once can improve the user experiences in a small but important way", said Bonita Stewart, VP of global partnerships. None of the launch partners are located in Canada, but Google promised more publishers are coming soon. Those include things like talking about why particular stories are being covered, clearly labeling opinion or analytic content separate from pure news, and sharing information about the employees and sources that are contributing to a story.
