China's President Xi Jinping reappointed with no term limits

Get out the popcorn

China's parliament unanimously handed President Xi Jinping a second term on Saturday (Mar 17).

However, all eyes will be on the vice presidential nominee as the recent constitutional amendment adopted by the rubber stamp parliament - National People's Congress (NPC) - has removed the two-term limit for the president and vice president.

Xi had made too many enemies with his anti-corruption campaign that felled thousands of Party bigwigs, so "if he did not cement his power at all levels, it could also hit him after his second term in office: downfall, jail, and sentence to prison", according to Austrian newspaper Die Presse, which published an analysis on March 12.

The vote means Xi will remain in power as the country's president until 2023, having taken office in 2013, reports Efe news.

The institutional reform plan of the State Council was submitted to the on-going first session of the 13th National People's Congress for deliberations. Wang, reportedly a fan of the USA version of the TV series "House of Cards", was mostly in charge of economic issues as vice premier from 2008 to 2013 and led trade talks with the European Union and U.S.

President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko congratulated Xi Jinping on his re-election as the President of the People's Republic of China.

Wu Qiang, a former political science professor at Tsinghua University, said Wang's role would be broader, helping Xi to enhance his authority since both men had worked well together in the past five years. Wang stepped down from his senior position in the Communist Party as head of an anti-corruption watchdog last October after reaching the age of 68, a customary age for high-ranking Chinese officials to go into retirement. Still, Xi's new power might provide reassurance to investors who believe that bureaucratic resistance has slowed his reform agenda.

The congress reelected Xi as president with a vote of 2,970 for to zero against.

Until last year, the 69-year-old Wang had been in charge of the Communist Party's Central Commission for Discipline Inspection.

According to the report, the powerful global department of the CPC and the Party's Leading Group on Foreign Affairs, which reports directly to President Xi are expected to merge. From India's perspective for the new line-up of officials, China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi was widely expected to be elevated to be State Councillor which makes him the top diplomat of the country.
