United States imposes sanctions on 19 Russians for alleged interference in American election

Donald Trump sanctions 'Putin's chef' as global relations fall apart

The sanctions include 13 individuals indicted in Department of Justice special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe.

Interestingly enough, the list of individuals and groups identified by Department of Treasury for punishment appears to have relied on the efforts of Robert Mueller's independent investigation into Russia's election meddling and possible ties to the Trump campaign - an inquiry the president has called a baseless "witch hunt".

The White House announced sanctions against Russian Federation on Thursday morning for a range of cyberattacks, including the NotPetya ransomware.

"It is tied to US internal disorder, tied of course to our electoral calendar", Ryabkov was quoted as saying by the Russian state news agency Tass.

"We're going to increase pressure until they change their behaviour and become a responsible member of the global community", said a senior USA national security official. Then they map the way it works and burrow deeper.

On Thursday, senior national security officials announced the US will sanction 19 individuals and five entities, who were behind a range of cyber attacks and efforts to interfere in the election.

One of cyber, which Washington and London attributed to Russian army, is so-called NotPetya, which originated in June 2017 in Ukraine and spread throughout much of world, affecting world trade and drug distribution.

The Russians "conducted network reconnaissance" of industrial-control systems that run US factories and the electricity grid, said the officials, who briefed reporters on condition of anonymity.

In announcing the sanctions, officials highlighting the recent cyber attack known as NotPetya, which it said was the most destructive and costly attack in history.

The officials described Russia's operation as ongoing.

The sanctions, which USA officials had hinted would be announced this week, were not directly linked to the poisoning in Britain of a retired Russian military intelligence officer and his daughter, though Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin cited the case as an example of what he called was Russia's reckless actions.

Trump also joined the leaders of the U.K., France and Germany on Thursday in issuing a statement that condemned the poisoning attack.

The US has condemned the poison attack, but it has yet to follow the UK's lead and take direct action against the Russian government in response.

"It is tied to US internal disorder, tied of course to our electoral calendar", Ryabkov was quoted as saying by the Russian state news agency Tass.

In total, the U.S. has sanctioned 19 Russian individuals and five groups for alleged election meddling and cyberattacks. The Department of Treasury is also targeting five companies in Russian Federation alleged to be involved in cyberattacks and hacking aimed to influence the campaign.

The U.S. Treasury Department announced the sanctions amid withering criticism accusing Trump and his administration of failing to use its congressionally mandated authority to punish Russian Federation.

A further two entities - Russian intelligence organisation the Federal Security Service (FSB) and the Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) and six individuals - Sergei Afanasyev, Vladimir Alexseyev, Sergey Gizunov, Igor Korobov, Igor Kostyukov and Gigoriy Molchanov - will also have sanctions applied.

Known as "Putin's chef," Prigozhin was indicted by special counsel Robert Mueller earlier this year for his involvement with the Russian troll farm. That shows the administration believes the investigation is legitimate, they argued.

The Times said special counsel witnesses had been asked recently about a potential real estate deal in Moscow, and that investigators have questioned witnesses about the flow of money from the United Arab Emirates to the United States. It crippled the electronic records of some U.S. hospitals for more than a week.
