Russian exile and Boris Berezovsky's close ally Glushkov found dead in Britain

Nikolai Glushkov a Russian exile and former associate of the late oligarch Boris Berezovsky has reportedly been found dead at his home in London

According to a statement, "police were called by the London Ambulance Service at 22:46hrs on Monday, March 12, to reports of a man found deceased at a residential address in Clarence Avenue, New Malden".

Police said the death was not linked to the poisoning of Sergei Skripal and his daughter in Salisbury.

Nikolai Glushkov was a friend of the late Russian oligarch and TV channel owner Boris Berezovsky, a critic of Putin's.

Mr Glushkov's friend Damian Kudryavtsev posted a tribute on his Facebook page, with a photo of of Mr Glushkov and the simple message: "Nikolai Glushkov 1949-2018".

When he was found dead, hanging in his home in Berkshire, his death was declared a suicide.

Police also said that they treat the death as "unexplained", adding that a counter-terrorism department is investigating the incident because of "associations" the deceased man is believed to have had, as reported by Reuters.

Glushkov worked in the 1990s for the state airline Aeroflot and Berezovsky's LogoVAZ vehicle company.

In an interview with The Guardian newspaper not long after Berezovsky's death, Glushkov said he believed he was also a target.

"The death is now being treated as unexplained", he said.

Glushkov moved to the United Kingdom in 2006 after a Moscow court sentenced him to a two-year suspended sentence for fraud in 2006.

Last year, a Moscow court tried him in absentia for embezzlement from Aeroflot, the Russian court-reporting agency RAPSI reported.

News of Glushkov's death comes amid heightened tensions between the London and Moscow over the recent poisoning of a former Russian agent and his daughter.

Authorities said the two are believed to have been poisoned by Novichok, a nerve agent believed to be 5 to 8 times more potent than VX or sarin.

Russian Federation has dismissed accusations of any involvement in the Skripal case as "nonsense", saying it would only cooperate with the British investigation if it receives samples of the nerve agent believed to have been used.
