South African triathlete Mhlengi Gwala attacked with a chainsaw

Mhlengi Gwala was riding near the University of KwaZulu-Natal when he was attacked

With a promising sporting career, Gwala had already competed in two global triathlons.

A South African triathlete is recovering after three men allegedly tried to cut off his legs with a chainsaw during a training ride.

Dennis Jackson, director of Elite Athlete Development program, told TimesLive that a motive for the attack remained a mystery.

Provincial police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said that the attack had not been reported and could not comment further on the issue.

"He tried offering them his cellphone and money, but they pinned him down and tried to saw off his leg", said De la Porte. They managed to saw through half of his one leg and found that their weapon was blunt.

A top South African triathlete was out training when he was suddenly attacked by three men who tried to cut his legs off with a saw.

Gwala's training partner Sandile Shange told the BBC the 26-year-old is stable in hospital and his injuries are not life-threatening. They kept on cutting and when they got to the bone, because the saw was not that sharp, the saw got stuck.

Gwala has represented South Africa at global competitions in Chicago in 2015 and in the Netherlands past year.

The grisly attack has alarmed athletes in Durban who routinely get up in the early morning darkness to train when few people are on the roads, and there was no immediate explanation for why Gwala was targeted.

"I haven't quite got to grips with exactly what happened". "He is a wonderful ambassador for the sport".

He reportedly said Gwala is none the wiser as to why the attackers left.

South African Olympic triathlon bronze medallist Henri Schoeman called the incident "disgusting" on Twitter.
