Iran calls on US, Europe to scrap nuclear arms, missiles

Iran Japan

Deputy Chief of Staff of Iran's Armed Forces Brigadier General Massoud Jazayeri said on Saturday that the Islamic Republic would hold no negotiations over its missile program unless the United States and Europe dismantle their nuclear weapons and long-range missiles.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has said the European Union is capable of playing a constructive role in order to protect the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) aka nuclear deal.

In a meeting with French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian in Tehran on Monday, Ali Shamkhani described Iran's defense power, particularly its missile program, as "an inevitable necessity" in line with the country's deterrent policies.

Le Drian was in Tehran on a delicate mission to reaffirm Europe's support for a nuclear deal that opened Iran's economy while echoing USA concern about Tehran's missile programme and role in regional conflicts.

Le Drian faced immediate pushback over French concerns about Iran's ballistic missiles, starting with Iranian students waving signs at Iran's Mehrabad International Airport protesting his comments.

Weakened Merkel has work cut out to make coalition last
In order for the SPD to agree on entering into a new coalition with the CDU/CSU, many concessions had to be made in their favor. Following the SPD's emphatic decision for a new partnership, Merkel is expected to launch her fourth government by mid-March.

Le Drian also pressed Iran on the activities of its ally, the Syrian government, amid the ongoing bombardment of civilians in the rebel enclave of Eastern Ghouta near Damascus. Iranian officials told Le Drian that Tehran will continue its ballistic program.

A display featuring missiles and a portrait of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is seen at Baharestan Square in Tehran, Iran September 27, 2017.

Netanyahu's central argument is that if the U.S. were to put in place new sanctions against Iran, countries throughout the world would be forced to choose between access to the Iranian economy, with its GDP of approximately $500 billion, and the American economy, with its GDP of almost $20 trillion.

Despite their differences, Iran has broadly welcomed France's efforts to re-engage with the country.

France also expects Iran to make a "constructive contribution" to solving crises in the Middle East, a French presidency statement said.

Burkina Faso arrests likely key attack suspect: govt source
Burkina Faso is one of a string of fragile countries on the southern rim of the Sahara that are battling jihadist groups. Some of the assailants may have managed to flee the attack on the military headquarters , a government source said.

The two countries are also at odds over Iran's involvement in the Syria conflict.

An official close to Rouhani said Iran "has always been open to talks and to resolve issues through diplomacy ... but this does not mean we will yield to unjust pressure over our inevitable rights, whether defensive or anything else".

THE failure of the 2015 accord between Iran and world powers to restrict Tehran's nuclear programme would be a "great loss", the head of the UN's atomic watchdog said today.

The visit is taking place as concerns over the fate of Iran's nuclear deal are growing.
