David and Louise Turpin Face New Child Abuse Charges, Including Felony Assault

Claudia Hernandez Diaz

The eldest victim - a 29-year-old woman - weighed only 82 pounds when rescued.

The six younger kids have been split up between foster homes.

The grinning ghouls are accused of keeping 13 children imprisoned, chained and starved in a squalid suburban home. The California Child Protective Services and Adult Protective Services will take care of the victims once they get a clean bill of health from the hospital. There, they have an open outdoor area to play sports and exercise.

The several adult siblings are in a local medical center, they are learning how to make their own decisions for the first time.

While they haven't been able to be reunited with their younger siblings yet, they keep in contact with them via Skype.

"That in itself is a new experience for them, understanding that they do have rights and they do have a voice", attorney Jack Osborn said.

16 arrested for killing
It said that there were injury marks in the chest and that ribs had been broken, obviously due to the torture Madhu had undergone. Madhu, 27, died in a police vehicle after being violently attacked by a mob that accused him of being involved in a minor theft.

As of now, the attorneys say the older children just want to live normal lives - go to the beach, the mountains, and the movies.

"I just want you to understand just what special individuals they are", Osborn told reporters.

Osborn says the siblings all have their own aspirations and interests.

Three additional charges of abuse were filed against both David and Louise Turpin on Friday, and one new count of felony assault was filed against just Louise Turpin. The shocking crimes alleged in their case have been covered in state, national and global media - where the Turpin home has come to be known as the "horror house".

They're "starting to make plans for their future", she said.

David Turpin and Louise Turpin, the California couple accused of holding their 13 children captive and torturing all but one, are facing additional charges, a prosecution spokesman said Friday.

Authorities said the abuse was so long-running the children's growth was stunted. David Turpin also pleaded not guilty to one count of lewd conduct with a minor. The Riverside County district attorney reportedly said that if the case goes to trial, the children are prepared to testify, according to CBS.

The couple was arrested last month after their 17-year-old daughter escaped from the family's home in Perris, California, and called 911.

Three new child abuse charges were added to the list.

The couple have pleaded not guilty to almost 40 charges each of torture, false imprisonment, abuse on a dependent adult and child abuse.

Defence lawyers have told the court they were sceptical they could be ready to proceed with a preliminary hearing in the case in May because of the amount of evidence turned over by prosecutors.

The Turpins are each being held in lieu of $12 million bail at the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside and are facing 94 years to life in state prison if convicted.
