Five suspected members of a drug-trafficking ring were arrested in Argentina and Russia as part of a joint police investigation that was launched more than a year ago after 389 kilograms of cocaine were found in the Russian Embassy in Buenos Aires, Argentinian officials say.

Argentine Security Minister Patricia Bullrich said the cocaine found in the Buenos Aires embassy was worth 50 million euros ($62m; £45m) and was of very high purity.

At least six people, including a former Russian diplomat and an Argentinian police officer, were detained on Thursday in a cross-border drug string which dates back to 2016.

According to a report by the New York Times, Patricia Bullrich, Argentina's minister of security, reportedly said during a news conference Thursday, "We have dismantled an worldwide cocaine trafficking organization operating between Argentina, Russia and Germany".
