Apple's New Glass Spaceship Headquarters Discourages Distracted Walking

Apple got a painful reminder that design and safety aren't friends

Part of that construction hold-up was down to just how demanding Apple has been with its architects, contractors, and the specialists doing the internal fit out. "While it is a technical marvel to make glass at this scale, that's not the achievement". Though none have required hospitalization, some have been treated for minor cuts to the head.

Apple's space-age Cupertino headquarters has 45-foot-tall panels of curved glass. Employees are not allowed to discuss anything related to Apple with outsiders.

Employees at Apple's brand new Apple Park "Spaceship" campus are the masterminds behind some of the world's most advanced consumer technology. According to iDrop News, at least seven people hurt themselves smashing into glass walls the day the new building opened.

Problem is, people can see right through the glass. It seems Apple didn't think about that and employees have been walking into glass walls unaware they are there. After the incidents, employees began using Post-its to mark where walls are, but the sticky notes were reportedly removed "because they detracted from the building's design". Steve Jobs tasked celebrated British architect Norman Foster to design the company's new headquarters back in 2006 based on his own conception-a giant flawless ring to rule them all, built using giant glass panes, carbon fiber, and ground unicorn carcasses.

As someone who regularly runs into stuff, I can personally confirm that walls, not people are to blame in this situation, and likely the whole things is more a source of brief personal embarrassment for those involved.

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment. A Silicon Valley-based spokeswoman for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration referred questions about Apple's workplace safety record to the government agency's website.

Nasser Hussain: 'Ordinary' and 'headless' England outplayed by New Zealand
Newcomers Mark Chapman (20) and Tim Seifert (14 not out) provided the late fireworks on their global debuts. Williamson's innings included four sixes as he and Guptill put on 82 for the second wicket.

Apple completed its $5-billion, 175-acre campus past year. Walking into clear glass at the Apple Store continues to be a hazard, warns our own Michael Steeber. But that very statement of "openness" and "free movement" of Apple's headquarters design is getting in the way of all those busy employees who keep smacking into the handsome glass walls.
