Telstra, Ericsson, Qualcomm and NETGEAR achieve 2Gbps speeds in live demo

Qualcomm Snapdragon X24 LTE: World's first Cat 20 2Gbps modem set to debut at MWC

QUALCOMM HAS KNOCKED-OUT an LTE modem chip that claims to deliver speeds twice as fast as a fibre connection. The most advanced networks only offer three aggregated LTE carriers at the moment, so would struggle to get close to such a nippy download speed.

As the world's first commercially announced Category 20 LTE modem supporting download speeds up to 2 Gbps, the Snapdragon X24 LTE modem delivers 2x the speed of the Company's first generation Gigabit LTE modem.

"As evidenced by our work with these distinguished OEMs from around the globe and as we demonstrated in 3G and 4G LTE, Qualcomm Technologies is utilizing our deep expertise and technology leadership to support the successful launch of 5G NR, driving innovation in the mobile ecosystem", said Alex Katouzian, Senior Vice President and General Manager for Mobile of Qualcomm Technologies. This technology advancement will enable even higher network capacity, and hence faster mobile broadband speeds for even more people. On Wednesday, Qualcomm took the wraps off the X24, a new LTE modem that supports download speeds of up to 2Gbps.

Qualcomm is predicting that commercial devices featuring the X24 will be available this year, despite reports that its largest customer may abandon its modems altogether. There are many other factors that determine network speeds other than the modem. Sprint's 5G network, set to launch in the first half of next year, utilizes a different part of the spectrum than AT&T's will, for example, and so it may require a specialized RF front-end solution paired with Qualcomm's X50 modem on handsets. "We're excited to demonstrate these advancements at Mobile World Congress and showcase how our technologies are created to expand the reach of 5G NR to new industries, new deployment and business models, and new ecosystem participants". It supports Full Dimension Multi-Input Multi-Output (FD-MIMO), a Massive MIMO technology that is foundational to 5G NR networks. Qualcomm says that sampling with its partners has already begun, and that we should see the first devices featuring the X24 launch by the end of the year. That's because "5G starts us off at 5 times faster than the best 4G networks available today", said Sherif Hanna, Qualcomm's director of product marketing for 4G and 5G products. On the upstream side, the modem supports 3x20 MHz carrier aggregation and 256-QAM for upload speeds up to 316 Mbps.
