Russian Federation intends to keep meddling in USA elections — Intelligence Chiefs

"The 2018 United States midterm elections are a potential target for Russian influence operations".

Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats - who, in the wake of the House Intelligence Committee GOP staff memo alleging FISA abuses, began by thanking lawmakers for renewing Section 702 surveillance authorities that the IC considers the "most important collection issue against foreign terrorists and threats to America" - said that Russian Federation continues to deploy their influence efforts "because it's relatively cheap, it's low-risk, it offers what they perceive as plausible deniability and it's proven to be effective at sowing division".

He said Russia, China, Iran and North Korea "pose the greatest threats" to the electronic operations of US government and commerce.

"We expect Russian Federation to continue using propaganda, social media, false-flag personas, sympathetic spokespeople, and other means of influence to try to exacerbate social and political fissures in the United States", Coats said.

USA intelligence concluded Moscow interfered in the 2016 presidential election, which has led to the current FBI investigation into possible Trump campaign connections.

New York City bomber Ahmed Rahimi sentenced to life in prison
NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill noted in a statement that Rahimi's sentencing should deter future acts of terror. The first bomb, which was in the area of 135 West 23rd Street, detonated and injured more than 30 individuals.

US spy agencies said past year they had determined Russian Federation used hacking and propaganda in an effort to tilt the 2016 presidential election in favor of the Republican candidate, Donald Trump.

"This is not going to change or stop", replied National Security Agency Director Adm. Mike Rogers. He said the Central Intelligence Agency has seen Russian activity and intentions to have an impact on the next election cycle, although he did not elaborate on the activity.

Trump has steadfastly denied any collusion took place. Bot armies promoted partisan causes on social media, including the recent push to release a Republican congressional memo critical of law enforcement officials. The bots have also sought to portray the F.B.I. and Justice Department as infected by partisan bias, said Senator Mark Warner of Virginia, the top Democrat on the intelligence committee.

King contrasted that with the frequent denials and equivocations about Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election by President Trump and the White House, which King said have led to a major disparity in belief around the country.

Coats also said the intelligence agencies "pass onto the policymakers, including the president", relevant intelligence.

NASA captured the most distant photograph from the Earth
The Nasa spacecraft that made close-ups of Pluto has set a record for the farthest photos ever taken. Andy Cheng, with the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel.

"No single agency is, quote, in charge", he said.

Earlier in the hearing, Pompeo said that the intelligence community has offensive "capabilities" to "raise the costs to adversaries" seeking to hack into election systems to disrupt voting.

Coats said "persistent and disruptive cyber operations" would continue "using elections as opportunities to undermine democracy" in the United States and its European allies.

But even members of Trump's own Cabinet - including Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and United Nations Ambassador Nikki Hailey - have rebuffed the President and sided with the intelligence community instead. "U.S. -based, homegrown violent extremists, including inspired and self-radicalized individuals, represent the primary and most-difficult-to-detect Sunni terrorism threat in the United States", he said.

Terrorism. The threat of terrorist attacks "is pronounced", Coats said, including from the Islamic State, al-Qaida, Hezbollah and Iran-sponsored activities.
