United Kingdom govt to meet Oxfam tomorrow over Haiti prostitutes probe

Charities warned after Oxfam Haiti prostitute claims

International Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt said on Sunday the charity had failed in its "moral leadership" and put at risk its government funding.

In the latest revelations, the Sunday Times reports more than 120 workers for Britain's leading charities were accused of sexual abuse in the past year, "fuelling fears paedophiles are targeting overseas aid organisations".

Oxfam has said it was "dismayed by what happened" and has since set up a hotline for people to report sexual abuse and misconduct.

"With regard to Oxfam and any other organisation that has safeguarding issues, we expect them to cooperate fully with such authorities, and we will cease to fund any organisation that does not", Ms Mordaunt said in a statement.

The French charity told the paper it made pre-employment checks but that Oxfam "did not share with us any warning regarding (his) unethical conduct, the reasons for his resignation or the results of internal inquiry".

Ms Mordaunt will meet senior staff at Oxfam today and the Charity Commission has written to them, as a "matter of urgency", requesting further information.

Flu still on the rise, hospitalizations high, CDC says
Influenza-like illness activity is at 7.7 percent breaking the 2003/4 high of 7.6 for a non-pandemic year. Pediatric flu deaths also continue to rise, with 63 children now dead from the flu so far this season.

"Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do to stop individuals falsifying references, getting others that were dismissed to act as referees and claiming it was a reference from Oxfam", a spokeswoman added.

Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt told the BBC that she will meet with Oxfam officials on Monday and if they don't turn over everything they know "then I can not work with them anymore as an aid delivery partner".

"People knew in DfID, I raised this directly with my department at the time".

"I have so much respect for Oxfam, they do great work, but this is a sector-wide problem".

"These allegations are deeply shocking", said one official.

"There has been in my view, not just a cover-up with Oxfam, there is a denial, a culture of denial in the aid sector about the exploitation and sexual abuse that has taken place historically for decades", she said.

McKenna, who was overwhelmed by the surprise phone call during his appearance on the talk show, began tearing up. Timberlake's phone call to DeGeneres comes days after he had to defend his performance at the Super Bowl LII .

She added: "They did absolutely the wrong thing".

That mission was also led by Mr van Hauwermeiren, who resigned from Oxfam in 2011 amid the charity's investigation into the Haiti allegations.

She said her "absolute priority" was to keep the world's poorest and most vulnerable people safe from harm.

The government's hardening stance follows reports in The Times newspaper that young sex workers were hired by Oxfam's senior staff in Haiti after the 2010 natural disaster which devastated the island and left up to 300,000 people dead.

Oxfam condemned the behaviour of some former staff in Haiti.

Oxfam has denied that they took part in any coverup thought according to reports they did not let the Haitian government what was happening which meant they were unable to take legal action against the employees involved.
