Tokyo schools plan to introduce Giorgio Armani uniforms faces flak

'Why Armani?': Parents question pricey uniforms at public school in Tokyo's Ginza district

Given that Taimei Elementary School is a state-funded institution, it's questionable why it would choose to implement such overpriced uniforms. However, when their costs were released a year ago, parents balked. Naturally parents are outraged at this move, claiming that this goes against the objective of a school uniform - especially since Taimei is a state-funded school. A minimum set - a navy-blue jacket and matching pants or a skirt, a long sleeve shirt and a hat - would be more than twice the price of the current uniforms.

"We have asked the principal to explain his reasoning for this again", said Takashi Ito, director of the General Affairs Section, the Secretariat of the board of education.

Another parent grumbled that his own suits were far less pricey than the pupils' uniforms.

Pricy Armani 'uniform' causes parental uproar at Ginza school

Though the new uniform is not compulsory, it could create embarrassment for students whose families can't afford it, some commentators said. "It's like saying no to poor people and welcoming only those who take pride in Armani".

"I was surprised and wondered why such luxury uniforms have been picked for a public elementary school", a unnamed mother told the Huffington Post.

Other than that, we spent the rest of the school year in weirdly cut, oversized uniforms that had exactly zero references to fashion.

On Thursday, opposition lawmaker Manabu Terada raised the issue at a meeting of the Lower House Budget Committee in Japan's Diet, noting that the uniform was more expensive than some business suits for adults.

It is negative, as 45 investors sold vehicle shares while 83 reduced holdings. 44 funds opened positions while 85 raised stakes. The shares price has positioned 8.09% over the past quarter while it has directed 30.88% throughout past six months.

"Schools should be mindful of uniform prices so that parents won't be overburdened", Education Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi told reporters.

The backlash has brought unwanted attention to Taimei Elementary School, which dates its history to the late 19th century and whose well-known ivy-covered school building is just blocks away from Tokyo's most expensive real estate. "It is desirable that the school makes a decision after having thorough discussions with them".

The school sent a letter to parents last November in which the principal explained that the school was changing its uniform to better reflect its status as a "landmark" in Ginza, according to the Huffington Post Japan.

But parents of the students weren't on board with the new duds when they found out the prices.

Influenza-like illness activity is at 7.7 percent breaking the 2003/4 high of 7.6 for a non-pandemic year. Pediatric flu deaths also continue to rise, with 63 children now dead from the flu so far this season.

Wada acknowledged the new uniform would cost more, but considered it worth it.

The uniform will come into effect in April.
